Before attending the Whickham wreath laying, I was in Swalwell to film the Remembrance Sunday service outside the Holy Trinity Church. This is the resulting video.
Whilst the Liberal Democrat internal elections draw to a close - you've got a couple of days left to vote, by the way - the campaign isn't cooling much. Suggestions by one candidate that they have contacted the police in relation to comments against them on social media don't give comfort that the declaration of a result will end the unpleasantness that has ensued. But there is no doubt that the campaign has certainly exposed two camps, each of whose positions are seemingly unacceptable to the other. And, because the nature of the divide, those less able to restrain themselves ...
The long-vanished Cathays Cemetery station was built on the Cardiff to Rhymney line to bring coffins and mourners to the city's New Cemetery. Best of all, it was built by the railway contractors Logan & Hemingway - Logan as in J.W. Logan, Liberal MP for Harborough and hero of this blog. I have blogged before about the old Boxmoor Primary School in Hemel Hempstead, which I attended between ages of 9 and 11, and even found a photograph and a drawing of it to post. Now I have found it on a clip of archive television film too. Put online to celebrate the BBC's centenary, the Rewind site makes available thousands of previously unavailable films reflecting life in Britain. Searching for one about Boxmoor, I came across a 1987 film about the election of trustees of the Boxmoor Trust, which looks after a substantial area of common land in the Bulbourne ...
Lee Harvey Oswald went to live in Russia in 1959 and returned to the US in 1961. Two years later he assassinated President Kennedy. Jack White asks if the most obvious theory about his motive is true. On 22 November 1963, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy is shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. Minutes later the spy chief of an intelligence agency telephones the head of station of a sister intelligence agency. Both men had met the assassin months earlier. He asks the question of his counterpart whether the action had been taken. The coded reply was yes. Unknown to the ...
One hundred years ago today, the now British Broadcasting Company started broadcasting radio. But what is the future of public service radio in and from the UK? The world is going digital but at a very unequal pace. Not everywhere can access digital services at an affordable price, if at all. The BBC has announced major changes to its local radio service. Local broadcasting will be restricted to eight hours during weekdays - 6am to 2pm. After that, stations will switch to sharing programmes across a wider area. News will be gathered over larger areas. Along with the loss of ...

The Boundary Commission for England has been busy working on revisions to the boundaries for parliamentary constituencies across the country. Boundaries are changed periodically to ensure that each MP represents a similar number of constituents. The new South Shropshire constituency will extend as far north as the southern edge of Shrewsbury. But it will no longer include areas of Herefordshire, including Leominster. It will include all the area we think of South Shropshire with a bit of middle of the county. The proposals are out for consultation until 8 December. The proposed new boundaries for South Shropshire constituency The proposals ...

Liberal Democrats, we have a problem. As Max Wilkinson has commented in a recent posting, soft Conservatives are turning to us partly because the government has broken its promises not to raise taxes. But we are committed to decent public services, staffed by people who are decently paid; and after 20 years of cuts in services and real reductions in public service pay, quality can only be regained by substantial and sustained increases in spending. Furthermore, public service workers - people who believe that life is not only about money but also about what you put back into society and ...
Wales-on-line has picked up on this story in the Times, on how the contents of a dead police officer's phone has unveiled a tocic culture in the Gwent Police force. The Times says that WhatsApp and Facebook messages on the phone show Gwent police officers openly discussing the sexual harassment of junior female colleagues; racist, homophobic and misogynistic abuse; the leaking of sensitive police material; and corruption. They add that in September, two Gwent police chiefs were dismissed for gross misconduct after a junior female officer was groped at a party for the outgoing chief constable in 2019. A third ...
