Crown Court was the ITV daytime programme you watched if you were off school with a cold. Across four days, a trial was presented and a verdict then given by a jury of members of the public. The stories were appealing, but what I did not appreciate when I first saw it was how extraordinary the cast often was. Week after week, rising young actors mingled with declining legends. Take this clip from the 1984 story Citizens. The police constable giving evidence is Colin Firth in his very first screen role and counsel is John Fortune, seen in the long ...

Embed from Getty ImagesFrom Julian Critchley's memoirs A Bag of Boiled Sweets, published in 1994: Macmillan greeted me gravely, and we lunched together. I noticed on the grand piano, among the clutter of signed photographs of heads of state in silver frames, a copy of Mosley's autobiography, which had just been published. To make conversation, I asked Harold what he thought of Oswald Mosley. Immediately, he came to life: "Ah Tom Mosley, quite the most able man I have ever met, but quite mad. He came to me once and said 'Harold, I'm thinking of putting my people into black ...

November is always a busy time for by-elections and Thursday was no exception, with nine principal council seats up for grabs – all in England. Sadly, only four of these contests had Liberal Democrat candidates. As soon as you find out there is a by-election coming up in your area, don't assume somebody else will organise it - please get in touch with ALDC straightaway, apply for a grant if you need one and always stand a candidate! Starting in the North West of England, in Burnley, we came heartbreakingly close to gaining a seat from the Conservatives. Commiserations to ...

Some of us saw this coming, didn't we? We've spent years, literally, talking about it. However, the topic of labour shortages and the impact (negative) of Brexit is coming back to us like a boomerang. It was absolutely fascinating to see an intervention from Lord Wolfson, the Boss of retailer Next, who said that Britain needs a different approach to migration. Wow, quite a "discovery"! And yet, there are still plenty of people who want us to "move on" and look ahead for a brighter and more prosperous future. I am absolutely convinced that we have lost several years to ...

Cannabis has recently been back in the news, due to positive developments abroad, but unfortunately less so domestically. Germany is pressing ahead with plans to introduce a regulated market. Under the proposals, adults will be able to purchase cannabis from dispensaries, individuals will be able to grow small quantities at home, and farmers will be able to cultivate it for sale. While US President Joe Biden recently announced a pardon of those federally convicted of cannabis possession, as well as seeking to reclassify the plant into a lower harm category. Even Thailand, which has previously had a reputation for tough ...

'What happens on tour, stays on tour' is a well-known adage that apparently applies to the behind the doors worls of Westminster as well. According to the Guardian, a Labour MP has claimed there is a "whisper list" of roughly 40 politicians to keep at arm's length in Westminster - including two former cabinet ministers. The paper says that Charlotte Nichols, the MP for Warrington North, said she was warned of colleagues to never accept a drink from or be alone with. The list, which is not written down, includes people known for "bullying or sexual misconduct": She said: "We ...

Michael is pictured on the south pavement of Perth Road where we have received residents' complaints about the poor condition of the footpath which has been repeatedly patched and is very uneven. As one resident put it : "I have noticed considerable deterioration along this stretch. This is a narrow footpath which is extremely uneven and badly patched. When it rains the whole stretch becomes a massive puddle." We have taken this up with the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership requesting an improved pavement surface here.

Remembrance Day

On the 11th of November 1918 Private Arthur Wrench of the Seaforth Highlanders wrote in his diary: "I think it is quite hopeless to describe what today means to us. We who will return to tell people what war really is surely hope that 11 am this day will be of great significance to generations to come. Surely this is the last war that will ever be between civilised nations." Thanks to Christian Art: for spotting this. We must hope that, in addition to the politicians' belligerent posturings, somebody somewhere, for the sake of today's private soldiers (and Ukrainian ...
