What Next?

The boss of Next, Lord Wolfson, (Tory peer and leading Brexiteer) is moaning that the Brexit we have is not the one he thought he was voting for in the referendum. Quite what he expected to happen when he campaigned for the UK to leave the EU and put up the barriers to free movement and the Single Market is not clear. He is however now unhappy with the way the immigration system is operating. He

From the Guardian: A heckler has been banned for life from the Royal Opera House after shouting "rubbish" at a 12-year-old actor during a production of Handel's opera Alcina. The incident occurred while Malakai Bayoh was singing his lines at the opening night of the opera on Tuesday. Other audience members shushed the heckler, who left soon after. Martin Kettle, who wrote the paper's review of the first night, equivocated over the heckler's motivation: Jones's dramatically poignant choice of a child alto (here a reedy Malakhai Bayoh) to sing the lost boy Oberto caused barracking from one single person that ...

It has taken me a few days to deal with the results of the latest elections to the Israeli Knesset. To say they were disappointing is a massive understatement. Even though the popular, the Nationalist parties led by Netanyahu only gained a small majority in the popular vote: 2,397,624 who voted for parties that will support Netanyahu and 2,334, 239 who voted for parties opposed to Netanyahu). But the way the proportional representation system works in Israel, it will has gained a majority of 6 to 10 seats in the new Knesset. For now, Yair Lapid remains the Israeli Prime ...

The Joy of Six 1088

The power of social media platforms in shaping the digital public sphere means they should not be in the hands of billionaires, argues Alex Krasodomski, Adam Bienkov asks if the Conservatives have chosen another duff leader: "Sunak's promise to lead a morally impeccable government didn't even last a week. Having resigned from Boris Johnson's government just four months ago over his handling of similar scandals, Sunak appears to be making exactly the same mistakes as the man he so recently abandoned." "Constituency names are getting longer, and although this is less measurable, they are uglier and often less historically resonant." ...

Not long ago a constituency poll put the Liberal Democrats on 58 per cent in Cheltenham, ahead of the Conservatives by a clear 28 per cent. That Blue Wall poll was published not long after the local elections, in which we defeated the Conservatives by 29 per cent in the Cheltenham constituency council wards. Many people are assuming that this means we are strolling to victory next time. However, as one of the 2019 general election candidates, I remember all too well receiving similar MRP polling figures suggesting a comfortable victory. Those leads disappeared and many of us suffered heart-breaking ...

Rural issues are often sidelined in the Commons and in public policy. Yesterday, Tim Farron and Helen Morgan made significant contributions to the rural levelling up debate in the Commons chamber. The debate, secured Selaine Saxby Conservative MP for North Devon, was sparsely attended but there were some strong speeches (Hansard). Helen Morgan and Tim Farron highlighted the way that farming is being treated under the Conservative government, though the botched introduction of the Environmental Land Management scheme (ELMS) and trade deals. Rural transport was a major issue, trains, buses and access to rail stations. Hospitals of course featured. Ambulance ...

That's one of the main factors behind the Democrats getting much better results than many pundits predicted (though the polls, of course, were better than the pundits). As Nate Silver writes: [My] question, about whether candidate quality would matter, is the easiest to answer: It's a resounding yes. For one thing, just look at the large difference between Senate and gubernatorial results in states with both types of races on the ballot. In the nine states with battleground Senate races in states that also had a gubernatorial race on the ballot, there were significant discrepancies between the performance of the ...

Two articles that stood out on the Mirror's website today underline the stark reality of post-Brexit, Tory Britain. The first one tells us that vital NHS and education workers are quitting their roles for better-paid jobs in supermarkets. They quote union chief Christina McAnea, many of whose 1.3 million Unison members work in hospitals and schools, who says: "I was on a TV programme recently with the chairman of Tesco and he was actually apologising for the fact that his company, his shops, are taking on ex-NHS workers because people are leaving the NHS to go and work there because ...

Churchill Retirement Living is consulting on the latest proposal to redevelop the empty supermarket site on Upper Galdeford. The proposal is for around 45 retirement flats, considerable increase on the 19 apartments in the previous proposal from Morris Property. There will two shops on the Upper Galdeford/Tower Street frontage but much smaller than under the Morris plans. Whereas the Morris scheme had a fourth floor which was set back from the lower three floors, this scheme is four storeys straight up. The result is a building that looks far bulkier that the Morris scheme, which itself looked rather bulky. The ...

Muslims need allies

It's Islamophobia Awareness Month. Which to be frank is not great. Sadly things have not got better since I was elected as the first female Muslim councillor in Merton in 2018. During my first term, I pushed Merton Council to accept the APPG definition of Islamophobia, but they didn't. And there is still denial that it even needs to be defined. This is a problem if we are to truly tackle this type of racism. Only a couple a weeks ago our candidate in the by-election in Kingston, who is a Muslim, was attacked viciously by the opposing Independent party ...
