BP profits demonstrate utter incompetence of government Hotels for migrants in non-Tory areas is "party first, country last" approach Matt Hancock should lose his MP salary while he's in the jungle BP profits demonstrate utter incompetence of government Responding to the news this morning that BP has announced £7.1bn in underlying profit, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Sarah Olney said: These profits demonstrate the complete and utter incompetence of this Conservative government. As families and pensioners across the country struggle to pay their energy bills, BP are posting unimaginable profits raking off the backs of hard-working people. Liberal Democrats proposed a ...

I recently appeared on the No Man's Land podcast, which describes itself as a, "pod on politics and centrism, for those stuck between political trenches". But rather than talk about whether or not the Liberal Democrats should aim to be centrist, we talked political polling. Hope you enjoy the conversation, which we recorded before Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister: Feedback very welcome, and do share this podcast with others who you think may enjoy it. The Bargee - described by one writer as one of the three great canal movies - is one the Talking Pictures TV Encore site at the moment. Written by Galton and Simpson, it stars Harry H. Corbett as a canal boat skipper with a girl at every mooring and his mate is Ronnie Barker. Beyond that, Eric Sykes is miscast (couldn't they get Nicholas Parsons?) and Hugh Griffith is as scary as ever. Miriam Karlin is scary too when crossed. The real stars here are the canalside locations. In particular, the swing bridge at Winkwell, by the Three Horseshoes pub, ...

The Guardian reports: Emily Davey, a housing expert and Liberal Democrat councillor who has been married to the party leader for 17 years, said revealing her longstanding medical condition was "not a decision lightly made" but she had deteriorated during lockdown and was aware others were struggling... She is frustrated that public health gets pushed down the priority list while the NHS is in crisis, which simply exacerbates the problems in urgent care. A shortage of physiotherapists is a particular problem for those with mobility issues, along with the closure of NHS exercise classes. "You've got to get ahead of ...

In midlife I have developed a fascination with the American zest for improving oneself. I knew that I was a procrastinator, lazy so-so between the hours of 5 to 6pm and that I was good at kicking things into the long grass but I have made a startling discovery of the shameful extent of these ... Embed from Getty ImagesMystery surrounds the condition of the former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov, who is widely reported to have suffered multiple head injuries and to have been placed in an induced coma. He is variously reported to have fallen over or been attacked - ChessBase has a page with the various reports. There is even one quoting his wife as saying the whole story is nonsense. It may be no coincidence that Karpov has called for an end to the war in Ukraine: He told a TV channel in Kazakhstan: 'I wish [the war] would end sooner, so ...

The Guardian has just published an interview with Ed Davey and his wife Emily in which they talk to political editor Pippa Crerar about Emily's Multiple Sclerosis. They have decided to do so now so that they can use their platforms as an MP and Councillor to advocate further for disabled people and their carers. I was very struck by Emily's courage, energy and determination to use her own situation to highlight the plight thousands of others are also experiencing. "I'm not the only one. People want to get back to where they were, but they need the tools." — ...

The BBC yesterday announced major changes to its local radio service, including BBC Radio Shropshire. Local broadcasting will be restricted to eight hours during weekdays - 6am to 2pm. After that, stations will switch to sharing programmes across a wider area. The BBC has only published limited details so far. I am told that other sources which seem to come from a briefing to local BBC managers yesterday are probably correct. From what we know so far is that BBC Radio Shropshire will keep two local shows. The breakfast show, currently hosted by Adam Green, and the morning show, currently ...

Over on The Conversation, Professor Paul Whiteley has written a piece entitled: "70 years of data suggest the Conservatives will suffer a big defeat at the next election - here's how I worked it out". Professor Whiteley goes back to 1945 and looks at polling for the Conservatives taken 19 months before each general election, compared to the seats they won at the subsequent election. The result is a remarkable correlation, with exceptions for a couple of occasions. Professor Whiteley's conclusion is: The actual seat total line ends in 2019 but the forecast continues further. It predicts that the Conservative ...

Over on Politics Home, there is an in-depth interview with Ed Davey. Their journalist Tali Fraser covers a broad range of topics with Ed from his personal story, his passion for carers, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, energy policy and our recent by-election successes. Ed has this verdict on the current situation: "The fundamental issue is about the Conservative Party. They've run out of ideas, and they're just trashing our economy." What would the Liberal Democrats do differently? "In or out of government we will say the same thing and that is, first of all, we've got to turn the economic ...

Shropshire Councillors Tracey Huffer and Heather Kidd, both members of Shropshire Council's Health & Adult Social Care Overview and Scrutiny Committee, are calling for more information and early discussions on changes being mooted for Ludlow Community Hospital and other community hospitals in the county. There needs to be a wider discussion about what health services are provided in the south of the county, in particular, and where they are located. There is an existing health estate in Ludlow. Ludlow Community Hospital has a lot of space after the closure of wards and the maternity unit. The debate over health resources ...

There are moments in life which often stay with us forever. The return, after 24 years, to the "Biskupiak" secondary school in Lublin, which I attended from 1994 to 1998, was just such a day, to which I will return very often. I was invited to give a talk about my journey, the work with the Polish community as well as the reasons why I decided to stand in the local elections. My presentation, which took place in the school auditorium, and which was attended by about 200 students, was a truly wonderful experience. There were questions; some easier than ...

A major embarrassment

Has it really got to the stage when one of the major offices of state is being held by a right-wing extremist, whose actions and words would be better suited to a 1970s National Front rally? The only difference it seems to me, is that the National Front would have been targeting Suella Braverman and her family, whereas she seems determined to prevent desperate asylum seekers and economic migrants from following in her family's footsteps in establishing themselves as British citizens. The Home Secretary's performance in the House of Commons yesterday, was a disgrace. As the Guardian reports, Braverman described ...
