NatWest Bank is to close its Market Harborough Branch in January, reports the Leicester Mercury. The decision has been condemned by the president of the Market Harborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce. Kyra Williams told the Mercury:"We've got a market here and not all of our traders actually use digital banking. "So it does exclude a large cohort of especially small businesses. I think the Government needs to intervene, really, and force banks to provide a physical network of banks that people and small businesses can use. "Because I think it is going to be a problem, unless we move ...

A Liberal Democrat press release brings the news: The Liberal Democrats have called for an urgent investigation, following a report that Liz Truss's phone was hacked by Russian agents during the summer's Conservative leadership campaign but that the details were suppressed by then Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Layla Moran MP said: These allegations are extremely concerning and raise serious questions for Boris Johnson and those at the heart of this government. We need an urgent independent investigation to uncover the truth. Was Liz Truss's phone hacked by Russia, was there a news blackout and if ...

Simply Local in Sunniside closed earlier this year. I'm pleased to see that the shop did not remain closed for long. It is now the home of Walkers Xchange estate agents. They had an official opening a week ago so I popped in and had a chat with them. I've already seen two of their For Sale signs up in Sunniside while out delivering Focus newsletters. So good luck to them and hopefully they will

News from Eden District Council: Penrith North welcomed a new Town Councillor this month, following an uncontested by-election. During the nominations period, which closed on Friday 21 October, one valid nomination paper was submitted, by Gwyn Clark, Liberal Democrats. Therefore Cllr Clark was duly elected as Parish Councillor for Penrith North Ward without contest. Polling day on Thursday 17 November 2022 will therefore not go ahead. A good reminder of one of the benefits that can come from increasing the number of council candidates the Liberal Democrats stand. UPDATE: I myself was elected unopposed for the ward of Penrith East ...

It's difficult to imagine our healthcare system without Nurses, particularly after the past few years of the COVID-19 pandemic. We all stood on our doorsteps back in 2020 and clapped for the NHS staff on the frontline, putting health and care first, yet so quickly 'the clap turned to a slap' and consciousness of the vital work faded. Nursing is an essential service, part of the fabric of healthcare that no one realises they need until suddenly you do. As a challenge, how much do you think about nursing? I would imagine unless you know someone who is a registered ...

Before We Didn't Start the Fire, before It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine), there was Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled me). Maybe REM were influenced by the brackets? I saw this in an old chart on Twitter the other day. I don't suppose I've heard it since it was a hit in 1974, but I immediately remembered it and smiled. Reunion were a group of session musicians who came together to record this track. The singer is Jeoy Levine, who had already enjoyed some success with bubble-gum and novelty ...

Tom Arms' World Review

China We will probably never know the reason for the removal of Hu Jintao from the recent Chinese People's Party Congress. Was it the result of the medical problems of a confused old man? Or was it a crude attempt by Xi Jinping to emphasise that he is now totally in charge? 79-year-old Hu was Xi's immediate predecessor. His administration was known for corruption, market reforms and greater political freedom; all of which are being suppressed by Xi. There must have been some discomfort among the party grandees about Xi amending the constitution to allow himself to serve a third ...

Having been reinstated as Home Secretary by Rishi Sunak. despite her previous breaches in security, and despite breaking the ministerial code, Suella Braverman just cannot keep out of the news. The latest twist on this saga is reported by the BBC, who say that an email sent from Suella Braverman's personal account on the day she had to resign over a security breach could throw fresh doubt over her claims about the speed with which she took action: In her defence, the home secretary said: "as soon as I realised my mistake, I rapidly reported this on official channels". She ...
