The is Foxton village hall, which opened in 1931 and is in a vaguely Tudor style. It was a gift from Robert Monk, who came from the village and made his money running the Robin Hood Hotel on Gallowtree Gate in Leicester. I was there today and thought of 1986, when the Liberals won three Harborough District Council by-elections in a row. I gained Market Harborough North, Simon Galton gained Thurnby, and Colin Wells gained Foxton, Lubenham and Gumley. The third of those by-elections took place on 9 October. I can date it because I remember it was the week ...

Embed from Getty ImagesA letter in Private Eye complains that Lord Gnome's organ began a report on restrictions imposed by the Iranian government with the words: The Iraqi government imposed widespread internet blackouts to try to contain the unrest that followed the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini... This reminds me of the story about the subeditor working a freelance shift on a newspaper who called out: "What's your house style? 'Iran' or 'Iraq'?"

Plans have been approved that will bring new life to the former infirmary building at Ludlow Community Hospital. The building has been unused and decaying for years. The maternity unit was moved into the main hospital when the infirmary became unfit for use for health services. The planning permission paves the way for this building to be brought back into productive use and to be maintained. It does not prevent the maternity unit coming back to Ludlow because there is an empty ward in the modern hospital block. The plans were approved yesterday afternoon, after a last minute set of ...

Until the 2019 General Election, David Gauke had been Conservative MP for South West Hertfordshire for 14 years. One of the voices of reason on Brexit, he ended up losing the Conservative whip just before Boris Johnson's illegal prorogation of Parliament when the opposition seized control of the parliamentary timetable to pass Hilary Benn's Act aimed at preventing a no deal Brexit. Like most of the country, he recognises the dangers of allowing Boris Johnson to return to Number 10 and has come up with an idea. He wants Ed Davey and Keir Starmer to invite Johnson's opponents amongst Conservative ...

As the tweet says: Handing out more expensive gongs to Conservative allies would be a truly remarkable way to reward the shortest tenure as Prime Minister in British political history. There should be no honours list for Liz Truss. — Liberal Democrats (@LibDems) October 21, 2022

Britain's political classes have finally recognised the elephant in the room. It is now safe again to utter the B-word. Brexit was embraced (narrowly) first in the 2016 referendum and then again in the 2017 general election. Political leaders decided that the issue was decided and to press for a return to the EU would damage electoral chances. The Labour Party decided to work on the basis of trying to achieve the best of a bad job. The Liberal Democrats, who had led the charge against Brexit, remain committed to EU membership as a "long-term aim" but have shelved it ...
