It's been an "interesting" day, to say the least, and there have been so many press releases coming out of HQ that, rather than try to get them into one post, it's probably easier to do it in two. Embed from Getty ImagesApologies for the bad language, but it's Isabel Hardman on the Spectator website quoting the comments of the resigning Conservative deputy chief whip Craig Whittaker this evening. Hardman writes: Wendy Morton has now left the post of chief whip after the government folded on the opposition day fracking vote being treated as a "confidence issue". MPs were warned they would lose the Tory whip if they didn't vote with the government. One MP who witnessed Morton walking past with the Prime Minister's PPS, tells me: "She's as mad as thunder and is saying 'unbelievable'." Craig Whittaker has ...

While it was right for Jeremy Hunt in his statement on Monday to cancel £32bn of the mini-budget it was wrong to end in April 2023 the energy cap price freeze. It is predicted that the energy price will now increase to £4,347 in April 2023. This is an increase of 73.9% which is much higher than the 54.2% increase of April this year which might have been the cause of the 2% increase in inflation in April. Therefore by ending the energy cap price freeze inflation might increase by 3% in April 2023. Jeremy Hunt stated that the energy ...

Today at PMQs Ed Davey asked about carer's allowances. He started by referring to the daily care that one disabled child needs and asked how carers can meet the additional costs this winter. In particular, he demanded that carer's allowance should be raised in line with inflation. Vulnerable people and family carers have suffered enough in this cost of living crisis. They cannot be left to pick up the tab for this government's economic failure. Yet the Prime Minister refuses to end their uncertainty and increase support in line with inflation. pic.twitter.com/K4aIl7Rs8h — Liberal Democrats (@LibDems) October 19, 2022 Mr ...

It's not long now until the internal party election season gets underway. Nominations have closed, but we have a few days until ballots go out by email. In the meantime, here's a brief overview of what's up for election, why they matter, and how you can vote, that the Lib Dem Newbies Admins have put together. WHAT'S UP FOR ELECTION? The main party committees, and the posts of President and Vice-President of the party. All the posts are elected by ranked-choice voting of the entire party's membership, for a term of three years. ITV reports: Sources in the Liberal Democrats have told ITV News that five new major donors – giving £50,000 each a year – have signed up in the past 10 days, including one who previously gave to the Conservatives. The donors have each added their names to a group known as the Liberal Alliance that provide funds to specifically target Conservative MPs in so-called Blue Wall seats... Sources said that two of the donors had approached the party out of the blue to ask if they could help. Story also covered in the Financial Times. Sign up to get the ...

There has been concern in the last couple of days about the former infirmary at Ludlow Community Hospital being knocked down for housing. I don't know why this suddenly arose. We published details of the sale in October 2021 and called for a plan for the entire heath estate in Ludlow. That of course has not materialised. We also said that housing and apartments would not be compatible with the hospital uses on the site. In May 2022, an application was submitted by Messrs Godrich & Bergius to convert the building into workshops and offices (22/02263/COU). Again, we published details ...

Flytippers' paradise

As a local councillor, flytipping is the bane of my life. It is a constant struggle to keep on top of it and get the council to remove it. Flytippers are rarely caught and when they are, in Swansea at least, they appear to get away with just a rap on the knuckles, if that. It is little surprise therefore to read this article in the Guardian, which reports the view of the chair of the Commons public accounts committee that the government's attitude to waste crime is "close to decriminalisation" as fines are so low. The paper adds that ...
