Jeremy Hunt's media round this morning was sobering stuff. Tax rises and public spending cuts seem to be the order of the day. While he might talk about protecting the most vulnerable, Conservatives have never been good at understanding how to do that. Our Treasury spokesperson Sarah Olney had this to say: This may be a new Chancellor but it's still the same old Conservative party whose failed economic experiment has cost this country billions. Now Jeremy Hunt expects struggling families and pensioners to pay the price for those mistakes. Thousands of families are facing increased mortgage costs and rising ...

"Time is up" - Daily Mirror Tory MP's turn on Liz Truss – BBC "Truss sacks Kwarteng in bid to save the premiership" - Financial Times "Truss fights for survival" - The Times "A day of chaos" - The Guardian Many thought that after Mr Johnson left 10 Downing Street only a couple of months ago, the outlook for British politics couldn't get any worse. I was proved wrong. So many people, who often might not have been interested in politics, are now really "switched on". While picking up my daughter from school yesterday, someone simply asked: what is going ...
I don't own an electric car, nor a hybrid, and I do not intend to get one in the near future. The cost is an obvious factor, but also doubts about their environmental sustainability. Electric batteries are expensive, their lifespan is limited and when installed in hybrid vehicles their weight means you actually get fewer miles for a gallon of petrol. Furthermore, we are ripping up precious landscapes just to get at the scarce metals needed to make these batteries. And that is before I get onto the problems of charging the battery while living in a mid-terrace house with ...
The problem with great power is that using it is too often an abuse of power and if you abuse it, you lose it. This is especially true of nuclear power as Vladimir Putin may soon discover. The Russian President has been rattling his nuclear sabres since before his February invasion of Ukraine. He hopes that rattling alone will be enough to bring the West to heel. This appears to be another of his miscalculations, leaving him with two unpalatable choices: put up or shut up. If he decides to put up (i.e. use nuclear weapons) then there are a ...
Permission granted for redevelopment of Budgens after 20 month delay - will it go ahead?
Planning permission has at last been granted for redevelopment of the former supermarket on Upper Galdeford. The plans are for 19 apartments with two retail units on the ground floor. The now approved plans were submitted to Shropshire Council in December 2019. But between the end of January 2020 nothing happened until yesterday, when the approval decision was issued. This decision should have been issued in February 2020. I will be asking why there has been such a delay in approving the development. My understanding is that the site will now be sold to Churchill Retirement Living, which owns Betjeman ...
With the big round of Liberal Democrat internal elections underway, one post has already been filled. So congratulations to Amna Ahmad, who has been re-elected as Vice President responsible for working with ethnic minority communities. Enhancing this role – making it elected by party members and making it a full voting member of the Federal Board – has been one of the important improvements made to how the party is run in the last few years. Many congratulations to Amna on being re-elected unopposed and the very best of luck for doing this role over the next three years. Sign ...
