The only member of Leicester City Council elected as a Conservative has resigned from the party and called on Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng to resign. Daniel Crewe told BBC News: "When Liz Truss got in, I didn't think she was right for the job but I thought at least I'd give her the benefit of the doubt and see what she was willing to do. "But when they introduced that budget, it's going to detrimentally affect the poorest people in society whilst looking after the richest. "It's old school conservativism and I can't be a part of that." He ...

Economic growth is at the heart of the current political debate. And yet growth is a complex aggregate statistic, and few people take the trouble to pick apart what is actually happening to it, as opposed to speculating what in theory might be happening. That has created a vacuum into which think tanks, economic commentators and politicians project their own hobbyhorses without fear of serious challenge. So what really is going on? The main mistake people make is to assume that the main driver of growth is productivity. This is exemplified by the famous quote from American liberal economist Paul ...

When our present financial crisis was foisted upon us, just a few days ago, by Truss/Kwarteng I immediately thought back to an earlier but in some ways similar crisis brought about by Antony Barber the Tory Chancellor in 1972. I was only 14 at the time so I learned about his big economic 'misstep' a few years later when I got involved in politics, I might add. A few days later I had one of my regular looks at Jim Hancock's blog page Hancock's half Page and he hit that historic note very well indeed I thought:- 'GHOST OF ALTRINCHAM. ...

So this is what happened at Westmorland and Furness when Liberal Democrats tabled a motion on the cost of living crisis. 'Dismay' after Tory councillors desert meeting during cost of living discussion https://t.co/mKYPHxYaVo — Tim Farron (@timfarron) September 29, 2022 The motion was passed and fully supported by all the remaining councillors. Tim commented: Our country is facing the biggest cost of living crisis in a generation - politicians of all stripes need to work together. For Conservative councillors to abandon the meeting is an appalling dereliction of duty and sadly shows how out of touch their party is with ...

According to John Burn-Murdoch in the FT "The Tories have become unmoored from the British people". The charts are very telling and worth looking at. You can see them here but best to go to the FT itself. From the FT this morning. The Tories are now the most right-wing ruling party in the developed world and are completely out of step even with their own voters https://t.co/rkPAbJzOcE pic.twitter.com/uBoxC7d6H3 — Richard Murphy (@RichardJMurphy) September 30, 2022 Through the mini-Budget Liz Truss has moved the Conservatives to the right of Brothers of Italy and US Republicans, and even to the right ...

Ed Davey, party members and Britain as a whole need a Liberal Democrat emergency special conference, argues David Evans. In less than 26 minutes last Friday Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng took an axe to what remains of the British economy and to the hopes and prospects of so many people, and totally destroyed the last vestiges that the Conservatives are the party of Economic competence. By the end of the day the pound had crashed over 4 per cent in value (and is still falling) and the FTSE a further 2 per cent, undermining the savings, pensions, and prospects ...

Yesterday's YouGov poll gave Labour an unprecedented 33 point lead over the Tories. With Lib Dems dropping to 7% you might think that is bad news for us, but, as we all know, polling is granular, and it actually increases our chances in Blue wall seats. In the Guardian, Gaby Hinchcliffe reports on our chances in Surrey, driven by fears over fracking as well as the cost of living (which has now gone far beyond high energy prices). For in his (Jeremy Hunt's) South West Surrey seat and Dominic Raab's Esher and Walton, plus neighbouring Guildford and Woking, Lib Dems ...

As if Liz Truss and her shambolic Chancellor had not taken enough flack for an uncosted budget that handed out cash to the rich at the expense of everybody else, and which plunged the economy into chaos, the Times reports that the Prime Minister has said that she will not change course and will push ahead with government savings to pay for her £45 billion stimulus package. The paper says that Ministers are drawing up plans for real-terms benefits cuts, saving £5 billion by increasing them in line with earnings, rather than with inflation. In her interviews today, Truss acknowledged ...

Residents have contacted us about the poor state of the BT phone box in Perth Road at the Miller's Wynd car park. Fraser is pictured at the box which is in a poor state of cleanliness. We contacted BT about this who advised : "I will arrange for the kiosk to be cleaned within the next 5 working days." We also asked if the company would consider changing the phone box to a 'red heritage style' traditional phone box as many residents have said this would be more in keeping with the conservation area. However, the BT response was not ...
