Falling pound: Recall Parliament to fix failed Budget Kwarteng must resign if pound reaches parity with dollar Falling pound: Recall Parliament to fix failed Budget The Liberal Democrats have called on the Government to urgently recall Parliament, so the Chancellor can fix his disastrous and out of touch Budget which has sent the pound plummeting. Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Wendy Chamberlain MP said: Last week the Chancellor announced a shambolic budget that gave huge unfunded tax cuts to big banks and the wealthiest while leaving struggling families and pensioners in the cold. As a result we are seeing the pound ...

A few of you will know that I've thrown my hat into the ring again this year. Again, I wish to serve as a member of the Party's delegation to the ALDE Party Council - it's something that I think I've done well and credibly. I've also put my name forward to be a member of Federal Council, for reasons I'll explain another time. This year, the nomination process has become rather more technologically advanced. You notify the Returning Officer that you wish to stand, and you are then added to a list of candidates who can nominated by any ...

The large round structure here is Leicester Midland steam locomotive shed, which was built in 1945 and serviced its last steam locomotive in 1966. After that a couple of steam locomotives were restored here - there was even talk of it housing a transport museum - before it was demolished in 1970. That's not a long life for such an impressive building, This site is still railway land and today is home to the depot of UK Rail Leasing, which own a fleet of heritage diesels. This makes waiting for a train at Leicester station, which you can see towards ...

In a move that represents a huge step forward for UK democracy, Labour Party Conference has voted for a manifesto commitment to proportional representation for general elections. This is a very welcome development and not quite the surprise some commentators seem to be suggesting. There has been a shift of thinking within the Labour Party on PR in recent years, with many members recognising that the First Part the Post (FPTP) electoral system no longer serves their party well - if ever it really did. Significantly, the motion was supported by a majority of members and affiliated unions - lest ...

The Daily Mail has a story today... OK, let's get this bit over with... The Daily Mail has a story today under, at least on its website, the headline:Labour will target just TWO Liberal Democrat seats to win the next election in anti-Tory manoeuvreBut when you read the story those two seats turn out to be Sheffield Hallam and somewhere unspecified in Scotland. Sheffield Hallam, of course, is a Labour seat. And there is no Liberal Democrat seat in Scotland where Labour are within a mile of being anywhere near having a chance of running us close. It may be ...

Our party is committed to numerous constitutional reforms intended to better represent the people in Government and Parliament. A comprehensive and interconnected constitutional reform programme is needed now more than ever, given the damage inflicted by the Conservatives upon our Union and constitutional norms, and the prospect of Labour their own plan this month. Therefore, we should consider developing and reconciling our plans to House of Lords reforms and establishing 'a strong, federal and united United Kingdom.' A Senate of Regions would be preferable to the current Lords, over-representative of London, the South-East and the East of England and including ...

An economic catastrophe

The immediate aftermath of Friday's financial statement led to the valid criticism that this Tory government is looking after the super-rich at the expense of the poor, a verdict shared by most people. The fact is that when all the changes are taken into account, including the freezing of personal allowances, only those earning more than £150,000 will be better off as a result of the Chancellor's policies, the rest of us are financial losers. It is astonishing, though not surprising, that a Tory government, elected on a promise of levelling up, would be so brazen in the way they ...

High inflation, rising interest rates and a mad scientist approach to economic management do not tend to instil confidence, as the markets indicated on Friday, following Kwasi Kwarteng's "this is not a budget" statement. The hedge fund guys have already made hay – they obviously had a pretty good idea what was coming – and now the rest of us can find out what is in store. There is little doubt that there is much that needs to be done in order to build a thriving future for the United Kingdom. From how our country is governed, to the supply ...
