The next in our series of tributes to the Queen comes from our Leader in the Lords, Dick Newby. He talked of her serenity in times of trauma and the values of My Lords, it is only a matter of weeks since your Lordships' House met to pay tribute to the Queen on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee. On that occasion, we knew that the Queen was already in frail health, but nobody contemplated that her reign had such a short period ahead of it. Because the Queen is the only monarch most people have known and was a ...

Like many people I have been thinking deeply over the past few days about what the Queen has meant to me in my life and what her death means for the future of the monarchy. Regarding the lifetime of service ... Continue reading →

Embed from Getty ImagesFrank Cotterell-Boyce has a lovely piece in the Observer on his experience of working with the Queen on her two late ventures into acting: the James Bond section of the London 2012 opening ceremony and her Platinum Jubilee sketch with Paddington. There was originally no intention that she should appear in the Bond sketch, but when the creative team went to the Palace to discuss it they were told that she wanted to take part. And when they came to film it she said she wanted a line to say. And appearing in the Paddington sketch must ...

Next up in our Parliamentarians' tributes to the Queen is Alistair Carmichael who has some very funny stories to tell about the Queen, including the time when she expressed disapproval about the State Opening of Parliament clashing with the first day of the Windsor Horse Show: The text is below: Thank you very much, Mr Deputy Speaker. I am grateful for the opportunity to try to articulate the keen and profound sense of loss across the northern isles. Her Majesty made a number of visits to Orkney and Shetland during her reign, all of which built a real connection between ...

Born in April 1942, Brandon deWilde* was the darling of Broadway at the age of seven. Acting alongside Ethel Walters and Julie Harris, he played John Henry West in the first production of Carson McCullers' play The Member of the Wedding. He took part in 492 performances and won a Donaldson Award for the best male debut in a play. (Charles Boyer had won it the year before: Denholm Elliott was to win it the next.) When he appeared in his second play aged nine, he was on the cover of Life magazine. And as an 11-year-old he starred in ...

A major miscalculation?

The i newspaper reports that Prime Minister Liz Truss is to join King Charles as he leads "services of reflection" for his late mother in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the coming days after the Queen's death. Her spokesperson says: "The Prime Minister believes it is important to be present for what will be a significant moment of national mourning around the United Kingdom." The fact that the world's media will also be there, I suppose, had nothing to do with this decision. Truss already has a reputation as a 'glory-seeker', spending much of her time as Foreign Secretary ...

I almost remember like it was yesterday. In June 2012, literally after leaving hospital, I had an opportunity to meet the Queen in Hatfield House. I am certain, whether someone is a royalist or not, meeting the Queen is quite a special moment. I was invited as a result of my work with the Polish community in Welwyn Hatfield. My short encounter with the British Monarch lasted maybe 2 minutes. She asked me about my nationality, what I did for a living and whether I was happy to move to the UK from Poland. At that time, she was already ...
