From left to right they are: Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Derek Nimmo, Edward Woodward, Ernest Clark, Peggy Mount, Robert Morley, Andrew Cruickshank, Ian McKellen. The only one I had to look up was Ernest Clark (erroneously called "Clarke" in Getty's caption), who played Professor Geoffrey Loftus in ITV's Doctor in the House. He was a poor man's Sir Lancelot Spratt, to those who know Richard Gordon's books or the films from the 1050s I have a new admiration for Edward Heathas "the man who faced down Peggy ...

The promised land of a peaceful retirement in one's 50s has yet to materialise for many, including me. Midlifers are looking after their own parents, children and, ... Long to reign over us

As chair of Sunniside History Society, I have scrapped the agenda for Wednesday's meeting. Instead of a presentation about the historical leftovers along the Tanfield bridlepath, I will be giving a talk about the 70 years of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's reign, outlining a major event from each year. It will be our tribute to our longest serving monarch. The evening will be called "Long to

I cried on the day the King died. And I surprised myself when I cried again yesterday when his daughter died. I'm not an ardent monarchist but Queen Elizabeth has been a constant presence in my life, her picture all around, and her celebrations writ large across the nation. As my colleague wrote yesterday "It is difficult to think of a public figure who has been so well thought of for so long." This feels like a seminal moment and a date in history that we won't forget. Back in February 1952 the teachers at my school were huddled around ...

[IMG: Liberal Democrats] My thoughts, as I'm sure are yours, are with His Majesty the King, Her Majesty's other children, her grandchildren and all those close to her at this difficult time. Her Majesty's passing, without a doubt, does mark the end of a very long, and indeed a seminal chapter in the history of our nations and for most people her presence has been one of the few constants throughout their lives. Throughout her life, Her Majesty served the country with the absolute greatest dedication, honour and dignity. From serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War Two, ...
