Davey: Make energy bosses pay for freezing of bills, not our children Truss Speech: Only way to end crisis is to get the Conservatives out of power Chope appointment to Partygate inquiry – government backs down Davey: Make energy bosses pay for freezing of bills, not our children Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has warned that Liz Truss' plan to make taxpayers pay for the freezing of energy bills would "make our children pick up the tab", while letting the oil and gas companies raking in record profits off the hook. It comes as the Liberal Democrat Leader introduces legislation ...

So Liz Truss is now ensconced in Downing Street appointing her new Cabinet. And it looks like it is going to be one of the most socially as well as economically conservative governments in over quarter of a century. This is somewhat surprising given that she is the first Prime Minister of my lifetime who is younger than me. After a 1000 mile round trip to see the Queen, she went to her private Commons office to send Rishi Sunak supporters Grant Shapps, Steve Barclay and Dominic Raab packing. Every time a new Conservative PM announces their top team, you ...

Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper has absolutely slammed Liz Truss's speech on the steps of Number 10. It did nothing, she said, for the business owners who were scared that they might have to close their businesses in days if not weeks. In case you missed it, here was my reaction to the new PM's first speech... pic.twitter.com/L657dbJqXn — Daisy Cooper MP [IMG: 🔶] (@libdemdaisy) September 6, 2022 Ed also called for a General Election to get the Tories out of power once and for all: I've been shocked that across the whole summer Liz Truss and the Conservatives have utterly ...

Christine Jardine has some questions for our new PM in this week's Scotsman column. For many of us, the question will be whether the new Prime Minister will be equipped to deal with the crises that have gone unaddressed while the country awaited the outcome of their party's decision-making process. And does the government actually even understand the extent of the fear being felt across the country at what this winter might bring? A survey carried out by the Liberal Democrats revealed this past week that almost one in four adults is planning not to turn on their heating over ...

Visiting Arbeia

In August, we took a half day off to visit the Roman fort at Arbeia, on the mouth of the River Tyne at South Shields. This was an opportunity to immerse myself in history. I filmed the above video while I was there.

It's been a year since Alex Cole-Hamilton appointed me Scottish Lib Dem spokesperson for Drugs Policy. This is a new portfolio shadowing the Minister for Drugs Policy Angela Constance in response to an increasing trend of drug-related deaths in Scotland that has made us the Overdose Capital of Europe. Since my appointment I have sought to learn, make connections and speak to people most affected by substance misuse while putting forward common sense proposals such as accelerating the rollout of Naloxone (overdose prevention kits), introducing supervised consumption centres, and calling for widespread drug law reform at the UK level. Here's ...

Booked

I wrote recently about the problems of getting to Brighton from the North East for Lib Dem conference later this month. Rail strikes had been announced for Thursday 15th and Saturday 17th. I considered and ruled out various alternatives for getting to Brighton: driving (I hate driving long distances and the pollution level is too great); flying (short haul flights are too polluting) travelling by

Boris Johnson and Liz Truss are in for an absolute treat today. It's more of a faff to get to Balmoral than a quick spin up the Mall to Buckingham Palace, but the journey from Aberdeen through Royal Deeside is absolutely gorgeous. The heather in the hills round about Aboyne is particularly stunning, even if it is, as forecast, tipping it down. I am so glad that they are going north to see the Queen. The 96 year old monarch has earned the right to say that they should come to her. I wonder what arrangements have been made for ...

Securing a smaller proportion of the vote amongst Tory Party members than Iain Duncan Smith is not a great start to a UK premiership but it is something that Liz Truss is going to have to deal with. However, as the Independent points out, she has very little time to turn things around. The paper says that storm clouds are gathering over her premiership, as polls suggest voters are disappointed by her arrival in 10 Downing Street and have scant faith in her ability to resolve the cost of living crisis: A former minister told The Independent they would "regret" ...

March in Cambridgeshire was a railway town and home to Whitemoor, the largest railway marshalling yard in the country. After Whitemoor closed in 1990 a prison was built on part of the site, which is as good a metaphor for the effect of the Conservative governments of that era as you wull find. More recently, the railway has re-established a presence there. The town's station once had seven working platforms, but can now manage with two The line to Spalding, which I travelled on as a student, closed in 1982 and will not reopen. There is more hope that the ...
