Truss must block Chris Chope from joining partygate inquiry Action needed now to address cladding concerns Truss must block Chris Chope from joining Partygate inquiry The Liberal Democrats have called on Liz Truss to block Conservative MP Christopher Chope from being appointed to the privileges committee leading the Partygate inquiry, after reports he is being nominated by Boris Johnson's government. Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse, who brought in the Private Members' Bill to ban upskirting which Chris Chope initially blocked, said: Chris Chope's lack of respect for MPs trying to protect women from upskirting shows the contempt he has for ...

Returning to meetings

Corporate resources scrutiny committee this morning in Gateshead and I was pleased to see my colleague Cllr Ron Beadle was back in the Civic Centre for the meeting. Ron had been diagnosed in May with bowel cancer and had successfully undergone a major operation. He is having chemotherapy but by all accounts he is making a strong recovery and all traces of the cancer have gone. As usual, Ron made

Like many I have been quietly hoping that the opinion polls were wrong and that Rishi Sunak would emerge as Tory leader and our next prime minister. His record as Chancellor was deeply flawed but he does at least look and sound respectable. M/s Truss has campaigned in slogans rather than policies, and, of the two policies with which she has hectored party members, one is nonsense and the other positively dangerous The nonsense is that tax cuts will release entrepreneurial vigour and stimulate growth, (though not necessarily sustainable grown). But Britain is not a high tax country, (though the ...

Please weep for me, Argentina! The truth is you were my model,All through my wild days,My mad existence.I made my promise, I will devalue. And as for fortune, and as for fame,I always pursued them with zeal,So it seemed to the world they were all I desiredAlthough they're illusions.Whom god would destroy she first renders mad! So, the former Liberal Democrat beats the former Chancellor to be the new Leader of the Conservative Party and, thus, Prime Minister. But it was rather closer than had been previously suggested, with only 57% of those Conservative Party members who voted backing her. And, given the polling data which suggests that members would rather have kept her predecessor than either of the choices put before them, she might have hoped for a better mandate. Ed Davey had an immediate demand for Liz Truss; Under Liz Truss, we're set to see more of the same as under Boris Johnson. From ...

The real Prime Mnister

We might be expecting to see Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak installed as the next Prime Minister-elect this afternoon, but some people have other ideas. The Guardian reports that twitter users were delighted to see billboards across London announcing that Larry the cat, No 10's "chief mouser", has thrown his collar into the ring to become the country's next prime minister. The paper says that a tweet from Larry's Twitter account with a picture of the billboard, featuring the cat in a union flag tie below his slogan, quickly accrued more than 14,000 likes on Saturday: "Dream come true," it ...

For those of you amongst our readers who don't know, I'm a Parish councillor in my small, but perfectly formed, village in Suffolk's Gipping Valley. For a variety of reasons, we've recently laboured without either a Chair or a Parish Clerk, and I am reminded how fragile our democracy is. You see, democracy requires not only politicians but administrators and these are increasingly in short supply. Politicians, as a species, are seldom popular, but the hostility shown to the more high profile ones puts off potential candidates at our tier too, and we need 100,000 councillors at the first tier ...
