I have on my real and virtual shelf a score or two of books - the Keepers – that help to anchor what I understand about the world, economics-wise. They range from histories and memoirs (Steering the Economy by Sam Brittan, The Time of my Life by Denis Healey), through classics and polemics (Keynes, Friedman,Continue reading "You should buy and read Restarting the Future by Haskell and Westlake. In what may very well be a first, BBC Sport wins our Headline of the Day Award. The possibility of just such an occurrence was discussed on the online forum Ref Chat in 2017.
Do you fancy putting Party President Mark Pack on the spot? Or any other party committee chair? Or asking Ed Davey something important to you in his leader's question and answer session? Maybe you want to ask Federal Conference Committee about making Conference more accessible, or affordable.. Maybe you want more information about the party's diversity strategy from the Federal People Development Committee. Or perhaps you want to ask Chief Whip Wendy Chamberlain about what MPs are doing on a particular issue. You only have until 1pm tomorrow to submit your question. Do so here. One of the advantages of ...
At last, Dunston Hill Primary School is to be demolished and the site is to be used for 35 affordable homes. It only took 13 years from the school's closing to planning permission being granted (on Wednesday last week). Local Lib Dems have been campaigning for the site to be used for housing since the school moved to its new site in 2009. The site should have been used years ago but was left as
Local budgie keepers had a show in Swalwell yesterday so I decided to pay them a visit. One local resident showed me around the show and explained all the different breeds. I'm not on Twitter so this meant I was not in a position to make lots of jokes about tweeting! The budgies on the other hand were tweeting, very loudly!

The Beths are a band from New Zealand and this is the tile track from their third studio album, which dropped (hem hem) last year. Stereogum describes it as chilled-out and wistful, as Elizabeth Stokes murmurs on how to pick up the pieces when someone who was a part of your life is gone forever. And the website quotes a "statement" from Stokes: "I really do believe that love is learned over time. In the course of knowing a person you accumulate so much information: their favourite movies, how they take their tea, how to make them laugh, how that ...
USA Who are the MAGA Republicans that Biden claims are threatening American democracy? For a start they support the cult of Donald Trump and cults are antithetical to democratic values. Next they propagate the lie that Trump won the 2020 presidential elections. And unless an estimated 40 million voters drank a hallucinogenic Kool-aid they know that Trump is lying. Or alternatively, America is facing a major mental health problem. Finally, they feel so threatened by the values and policies of the Democratic Party that they are prepared to jettison truth, the rule of law and a much-revered constitution in the ...
In the Guardian there is yet more evidence that the so-called 'levelling-up' agenda promoted by Boris Johnson, is just more political hot air designed to disguise the self-interested distribution of public money. I wrote on Thursday, how the Tories deliberately misled people in Wales over the way that Prosperity funding would be distributed, with the result that more money has gone to Tory held seats at the expense of more deprived areas. Now the Guardian reveals that Tory-voting south-east of England, the most affluent region in Britain outside London, last year received almost twice as much money as the north-east ...
Residents will recall that we recently posted 'concept drawings' of possible environmental improvements that could be funded through the Town Centre Fund. In terms of possible viable projects, three were identified - Pennycook Lane outside the police station, the Miller's Wynd car park and area around the West End Community Fridge and the Sinderins "triangle." The drawings we previously circulated covered the area round the car park and in front of the police station. The council's City Development Department has now provided similar drawings for the Sinderins "triange" - a site that, in our view is crying out for an ...
