Conservative HQ has briefed the media that it plans to attack other parties in the next election campaign for offering 'a coalition of chaos' instead of the 'strong and stable' single-party government the UK has benefitted from since 2015. Liberal Democrats should be rubbishing this fantasy. In the past seven years we have suffered two early elections and three prime ministers - with a fourth now coming into office. We have had four Chancellors of the Exchequer, five foreign and business secretaries, and six cabinet ministers for education - seven if we include Michele Donovan's two-day term. Junior ministers have ...

I think most political activists outside the Conservative party will have worked out that Liz Truss tries to combine the style of Thatcher with the boosterism of Johnson. The Iron Lady will always be "that bloody woman" for many of us. She can be accused of promoting profoundly destructive policies but I don't think she went down the road of cheap optimism as far as Johnson/Truss have gone. Most politicians will use the word "hope" in their speeches and leaflets but it is important to distinguish between the hope that flows from a vision of a better world and a ...

She also served as the first leader of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council when it was formed in 2019 and is currently leader of the opposition and Liberal Democrat Group on the local authority... As part of her selection address, Vikki told members: "Mid Dorset and ...

Strike!

Rail strikes have been announced for Thursday 15th and Saturday 17th September. Lib Dem conference in Brighton starts on 17th and my plan had been to go to conference that day, travelling down from the North East and arriving in Brighton in the afternoon. I then decided to head south on Friday 16th to meet up with a horticultural friend of mine in London and then head to Brighton from London the

Tories in Winlaton

I have heard on the grapevine that the Conservatives were out campaigning in Winlaton and High Spen over the summer. The ward is the only one currently where the Conservatives have a realistic (though still a bit distant) chance of winning a seat on Gateshead Council which has been an electoral desert for them for 30 years ago. They must have been disappointed by the result in Winlaton and High

An unbridgeable gulf

They said it was teething problems, that the Whitehall civil servants and ministers would come around to the reality of devolution and adapt accordingly. They couldn't have been more wrong. In the early days of devolution, with the exception of the Home Office, by-and-large Whitehall made an effort to work with the devolved bodies. However, as administrations changed and more powers were handed over to the nations, things started to get a little more sticky. Now, the Guardian reports that the UK government's dealings with the devolved nations has been described by former ministers as "demoralising", "depressing" and devoid of ...

One of the privileges of bucket-list-retirement has been to spend a little time in Washington DC. There is much to admire in the US constitution and some elements of its democracy. The democratic status of its capital city is not admirable. It's a "special federal district" – the District of Columbia – not a state. So, it does not have voting representation in Congress. That's an estimated 536,768 people (Stacker.com) eligible to vote, without someone to vote on their behalf in Congress. Compare that to the state of Wyoming's voting-eligible population of 434,852, who elect a voting US House representative ...

I took a ride along the Borderlands Line railway from Bidston (Merseyside) to Wrexham Central the other day. The ride was pleasant and the Transport for Wales trains (Class 150's), both there and back, had a good number of passengers on them. My return 'Anytime Day Return' ticket, purchased at Bidston Station, was £8.90 and the journey each way was just under an hour. Bidston Station on Merseyrail's West Kirkby Line where both a train from West Kirby to Liverpool and my Borderline TfW train were in the station. My first thought was this line seems to be reasonably well ...
