There is speculation tonight that Michael Gove will stand down from his Surrey Heath seat if Liz Truss is elected leader of the Conservative Party next Monday. The Guardian and Independent report the Liberal Democrats are rushing through plans to confirm a candidate for the seat amid speculation that the former levelling up secretary is considering quitting parliament, triggering a byelection. The Lib Dems are reported as having set a deadline of this week for selection of a candidate for the constituency. Tory sources are reported as denying that Gove will quit, accusing the Lib Dems of political dirty tricks. ...
Vince Cable has challenged Labour and the Liberal Democrats to speak up more about the damage Brexit is doing to our country o stop even more damage being inflicted. The former Lib Dem Leader recently became President of the European Movement and writes in the Independent (£) that support for Brexit is collapsing. Outside that goldfish bowl, opinion is shifting. An Opinium survey showed that 60 per cent of voters (including 40 per cent of Leave voters) think Brexit has "gone badly". Ipsos found, in June, that 45 per cent of those surveyed (including 22 per cent of Leave voters) ...
The Liberal Democrats have brought forward the selection of a prospective parliamentary candidate for Michael Gove's Surrey Heath seat because of rumours that he may resign from the Commons and trigger a byelection there. A Lib Dem source quoted by the Guardian says: "We are selecting a candidate and we are on high alert, but that doesn't necessarily mean the byelection will happen. We are also preparing in other seats, for example in Mid Bedfordshire, if Nadine Dorries is given a peerage." Gove had a majority of more 18,000 at the 2019 general election, but then the Conservative majority was ...

It's not just individuals and families who will be hit by the horrific rise in fuel prices: businesses will be two. And among them are two types of business we like to think of as quintessentially British. The Independent reports today: Pubs and brewers across the UK are at risk of closure within months amid price hikes upwards of 300%, industry bosses have warned. Bosses of six of the UK's biggest pub and brewing companies have signed an open letter to the government urging it to act in order to avoid "real and serious irreversible" damage to the sector. The Carer's Leave Bill, a Private Members' Bill brought forward by Wendy Chamberlain, Scottish Liberal Democrat deputy leader, aims to introduce a new right for employees with caring responsibilities of up to one week of unpaid carer's leave annually. The bill will receive its second reading on 9 September. As reported by the Independent and several other media outlets, the right to leave is getting widespread support from MPs, businesses and charities. The bill will give unpaid carers the flexibility to attend routine hospital appointments or help the person they care for recover from a planned operation. There is hope ...
It is the season of surveys and one of the latest is on pharmacy provision in Shropshire. Although this survey has flaws, it is important that people take part in this consultation to highlight the problems we have been facing in Ludlow over the last year when pharmacies have closed without notice or have provided limited services due to a lack of staff. Attracting permanent pharmacists and locums to our town has proved difficult. This has made harder for people pick up their medications and has increased the pressures on other staff in the pharmacy. The survey is being conducted ...

When councillors are concerned about resolutions passed by the Cabinet we can 'call them in' for further debate and discussions. This gives the opportunity for a full examination of issues to be made in a cross-Party setting. We don't do ... Continue reading →
The Welsh Liberal Democrats have paid tribute to former Welsh Assembly Member Mick Bates following the news that he has passed away following a battle with cancer. Mick Bates was elected as the Liberal Democrat member for Montgomeryshire constituency in the inaugural Welsh Assembly elections in 1999 and continued to serve as its member until 2011. Prior to becoming the Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire Mick had worked as a teacher, as a farmer and as a Liberal Democrat County Councillor. Mick was well known for being a tireless campaigner for rural communities, but also for being decades ahead of his ...
Fraser is pictured at the wall at the junction of Pentland Avenue and Saggar Street. Unfortunately it has been damaged - residents advised us by a vehicle - and requires repair. We therefore raised this with the housing repairs manager at Dundee City Council and have now received confirmation that an Order has been raised for repairs.
Actually, it's difficult to think how the Tories can screw up the economy any more than they have, but at least one economist thinks that Liz Truss' plans to cut taxes will make things worse. The Times reports that Paul Johnson, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, has accused Truss of adopting a "simplistic mantra" of cutting taxes to solve the cost of living crisis. He has warned that she would "completely crash the public finances" if she pushed ahead with tens of billions of pounds of tax cuts: He told The Times that a proposal to cut VAT ...
