It seems Neil Parish, the former Conservative MP for the seat who resigned after admitting to twice watching porn in the Commons chamber, is considering a comeback. A report in the I says he is thinking of standing in Tiverton and Honiton as an Independent at the next election. This could make it easier for Richard to hold the seat. Parish is qoted in the report: "I'll run as an independent if I think I can ...

I have to admit that, reading the various reports on the prospects for household finances, my blood runs somewhat cold. If, like me, you've been paying attention to the data on household financial resilience, you'll know that there are already alarming numbers of households where something like a boiler failure would send them into debt. The prospects of finding thousands of pounds to pay heating bills will add two or more million households to that group, and any extended period of high gas prices will add more and more. And, whilst attention has turned to energy costs, households are also ...

Sixteen years ago today, a new website appeared on the scene. Liberal Democrat Voice's first piece suggested Simon Hughes was "certain" to be challenged for the Party Presidency. Word reaches the Voice that weeks before the position had been advertised in Lib Dem News, party officials in Cowley Street received a call requesting a copy of the nomination papers for party President - the caller was not acting on behalf of Simon Hughes. Word also reaches us that one potential candidate is positioning himself to blitz Autumn Conference with an army of supporters bearing nomination papers, to seize the momentum. ...

Reading of the death of Giles Radice reminded me of the 1973 Chester-le-Street by-election, the first time I ever canvassed. The constituency put the rotten into borough. It was run by Andrew Cunningham, father of Jack, effectively a Soprano to the main Labour mafia family led by T Dan Smith in Newcastle. Cunningham went to jail in 1974 for his role in the Poulson affair, former Labour MP Eddie Milne wrote a graphic account of his experiences in Blyth in his book 'No Shining Armour'. I have to say that Winchester-educated Giles was in no way associated with this. He ...

As I did say at the end of my post of my resignation letter from the LDCF (Liberal Democrat Christian Forum) I did say I would publish a follow up about some of the context before and to answer some the queries that have come up since. First of all the context. Last weekend I became aware that the Chair of LDCF has signed an open letter started by Liberal Voice for Women. He had signed it not in a personal capacity as all bar one of the other signaturies had done, but on behalf of the exec of LDCF. ...

Dear [Secretary], In light of the recent statement that you have posted in the LDCF website and on twitter I cannot in good conscience as a gay, liberal, Christian remain a member of Lib Dem Christian Forum. The statement starts by saying the the LDCF has unanimously decided to sign the letter in support of LGB Alliance and FiLiA attending our conference. As a member of LDCF I was not consulted nor did I give authority for you or any member of the Executive to speak on my behalf to make this decision unanimous of the Forum, which I believe ...

Already, a great many people I know are cancelling direct debits to their energy companies, prepared to withhold payment and go into debt, rather than see their bank accounts drained by an ever-increasing charge on their ability to keep warm and cook their own food. The impact on businesses is incalculable. Many will try to push their additional costs onto their customers, fueling inflation even more, while many will go out of business altogether. It is a grim prospect caused by the escalating cost of gas and electricity at a time when the Russians are burning off gas rather than ...

We've mentioned several times before on this site about the impact of rising fuel bills on disabled people. It's not just that if you are less mobile you need more heating, it's about charging up wheelchairs, and running life sustaining equipment like feeding pumps. Clare Steel* is a Labour Councillor in West Dunbartonshire. She cares for her 15 year old daughter Katie, who has complex medical conditions which mean she can't walk, talk or swallow. Katie depends on nine separate pieces of electrical equipment to keep her alive and make sure she can get washed and go up and down ...
