Davey – price rise "nothing short of catastrophe for millions" Sewage: New Govt plan is a cruel joke and will result in 325,000 sewage dumps a year by 2030 Davey – price rise "nothing short of catastrophe for millions" Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey responds to price cap announcement: This energy price rise is nothing short of a catastrophe for millions of families and pensioners already struggling to make ends meet. The only option is for energy prices to be frozen before these rises wreak havoc on our communities. Then we need a proper plan to be put in place ...

Watching Jacob Rees-Mogg lounging on the government front bench it was easy to imagine he way recreating his glory days at Eton. But, by all accounts, it wasn't like that for him. Marina Hyde told the story back in 2018:acob was a sort of urban myth on Eton High Street, down which he liked to proceed clicking his flapping umbrella as though it were a cane. Collectors of arcane school rules may care to know that at School, you weren't allowed to fasten up your folded umbrella until you had attained a certain level of privilege (privilege in the earlier ...

There is just one by-election result to report this week - but what a result! East Riding Lib Dems scored yet another stunning by-election victory - their 3rd by-election gain in 5 months - as Diana Stewart took the Conservative seat of Beverley Rural with 59.4% of the vote. That's a 36% increase in vote-share and a thumping majority of 832! Congratulations to newly elected Cllr Diana Stewart and the Lib Dem team in the East Riding on another amazing win - a hattrick of by-election gains after winning Bridlington North in June, and South Hunsley in April. East Riding ...

Last time we visited Pontesbury this large village on the Shrewsbury to Bishop's Castle road there had been a snake on the lose. This week Shropshire's snake problem has moved to the north of the county, with two boa constrictors being found near Baschurch. If you live in North Shropshire and have snake problems, contact its Liberal Democrat MP Helen Morgan. I'm sure she'll be happy to handle them. But that doesn't mean Pontesbury is in the clear. For the past two days military personnel have been in the village dealing with second world war munitions found on a building ...

These past twelve months have seen some of the worst assaults on trust in public life I have ever witnessed. From the second jobs scandal, to Partygate, to an avalanche of allegations of sexual misconduct against MPs, hardly a week has gone by without a story dominating the headlines that our leaders are not using their power with our interests at heart. We would be naive to assume that this is not having a long-term impact. Last December, trust in politicians reached its lowest level on record. Polling by Ipsos shows lack of faith in politics / politicians as the ...

It's thirty years since my first autumn federal conference, appropriately also in Brighton. That 1992 conference was the start of the most successful electoral run in our party's history.

Well, they did it. Ofgem have today, increased the energy price cap by 80% to to £3,549 from October, that is the equivalent to a £300 a month plus the standing charge, completely unaffordable for most families. And where is the government in all this? They are absent without leave. The Guardian reports that the cap will be almost treble what it was a year earlier last October, when it was raised to £1,277: The announcement comes as households attempt to budget for a tough winter. Soaring energy bills have fuelled rampant inflation, which breached 10% last month and is ...

So at last we have the announcement that the cap on energy prices will rise on 1st October from £1971 to an unprecedented £3539 pa. That is a massive rise of £130 a month. Or put another way, during the last quarter of this year the cost of electricity will nearly double (from 28p per kWh to 52p) and gas will more than double in price (from 7p to 15p per kWh). This is completely unsustainable for people on low incomes and comes on top of the huge rise in other costs. For example, food costs for an average family ...
