Those hoping to become leader of the Conservative Party and the next prime minister, needed to secure the support of 20 Tory MPs by 6pm this evening in order to make it on the ballot paper. There are eight MPs in the race. Sajid Javid announced his withdrawal minutes before the result was announced, as did Rehman Chishti. Javid resigned from the government at the same time as Rishi Sunak, triggering a wave of resignations that led to Boris Johnson's downfall. Sunak gained the most nominations from Conservative MPs today. He is joined by seven others in the first round ...
Lewis Baston looks at the significance of last week's local by-elections in Camden and Hackney: "They show how strong some inner urban communities, inhabited by much-maligned educated professionals and global citizens, can be. There is a fiercely protective local pride in these neighbourhoods." "In truth, what boarding schools do culturally is 'get rid of the maternal. They were intended to stop all that softness, to turn boys into men and what that means is that masculinity became a hard, disconnected, mean and emotionally vapid way of being in the world.'" Suzanne Zeedyk talks to Neil Mackay about what being sent ...
On behalf of Liverpool's Liberal Democrat Group, I have welcomed the decision of RESET to change the wording of their citywide petition to include a straight run off between the two most different forms of governance. The Mayoral model is ... Continue reading →

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have accused the Conservatives of allowing themselves to be "trampled over" during trade negotiations with New Zealand and Australia when it comes to agricultural interests. The Welsh Lib Dems have argued that despite Australia having an economy less than 40 per cent the size of the UK's and New Zealand's economy being 30 times smaller than the UK, the Conservatives have capitulated to their demands for agricultural access to the UK market, placing Welsh farmers at significant risk. The Farmer's Union for Wales (FUW) reported that the increase in New Zealand's import quota for sheep meat ...

There is talk of Eurovision coming to an as yet unspecified venue in Newcastle. With Russia invading Ukraine, this year's Eurovision winner is not in a position to host. As runner up it now looks like the UK will inherit that role in 2023. I'm no fan of this annual camp musical jamboree (I was put off by Brotherhood of Man) but I'd be very happy for the contest to come to Tyneside. Think of the
The long-awaited Welsh Government consultation on reforming council tax has been launched and it is pretty much as expected. As Wales on line reports, the proposal is for all 1.5m properties in Wales to be revalued, new bands created and new tax rates for each band set. They add that options are also being discussed for new bands to be added at the top and the bottom and rolling revaluation cycles introduced. Discounts, exemptions and premiums would all be overhauled along with the Council Tax Reduction Scheme which provides support to low-income households. The indication is that higher value properties ...
I've been a big fan of the Crooked Media organisation's stable of podcasts for a few years now. Crooked was set up in 2017 by former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Dan Pfeiffer and Tommy Vietor in the wake of Trump's victory to provide a progressive media outlet that encouraged activism to restore the Democrats' fortunes. Its growing team and stable of podcasts informs and entertains about all aspects of US politics. Its Hysteria podcast, hosted by journalist Erin Ryan and former White House Head of Scheduling and Advance Alyssa Mastromonaco aired the day Justice Anthony Kennedy retired from the Supreme ...
