Our Headline of the Day Award goes to the Daily Star. I am reminded of the Rutstock Festival of 1969 and its role in the demise of the Bonkers Hall Safari Park.

David Warburton, MP for Somerton and Frome, was suspended by the Conservative Party in April and now faces a Parliamentary investigation: The Conservatives suspended the whip from Warburton in April after a series of allegations emerged concerning sexual harassment and cocaine use. It is not the role of the parliamentary commissioner for standards, Kathryn Stone, to investigate these claims. But her office announced on Wednesday that she had launched an inquiry into whether Warburton had broken the code of conduct for MPs on three counts, including paid advocacy and failure to declare a gift or other benefit... It was the ...

I never did learn her name, but I think this is my favourite of all the cats I have met in Shropshire. As I wrote the last time I met her: There is a little square at the top of the main street in Bishop's Castle. It's where the town's Market Hall stood until it was demolished in 1951. The Powis coat of arms that used to be on the building can still be found there. If you visit the square you may well find a grey and white cat keeping an eye on things. I met her this summer ...

Our first year in office

It is now just over a year since I became leader of Oxfordshire County Council following momentous May 2021 election results that changed the political landscape in the county and led to the formation of the Oxfordshire Fair Deal Alliance, led by the Lib Dems in partnership with the Greens and Labour. The intervening period has proved to be one of real achievement but also huge challenges - indeed the list of national and international developments since spring 2021 alone is quite breath-taking. All of them have had an impact in one way or another on our daily lives and ...

On the road

Beth Rigby, the Political Editor at Sky News, has been chatting with Ed Davey. Spent some time with @EdwardJDavey on the road in Taunton, Somerset – can the Lib Dems make a comeback, and make their mark in the blue wall... Our report produced by @mollie_malone1 and filmed by @DeanMassey25 pic.twitter.com/5fvwFYAq3m — Beth Rigby (@BethRigby) June 21, 2022 * Mary Reid is a contributing editor on Lib Dem Voice. Depending on the results in Tiverton & Honiton and Wakefield this week, that could be a question that's very much on people's minds, especially that of Conservative MPs.

Plans have been published for a solar farm at Brick House Farm, Grete (22/02565/FUL). The 54-hectare solar farm would have a capacity of around 49.9 MW, generating enough renewable energy to meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 15,000 homes. The developer, Bluefield, expects to begin construction of the site in 2023 if it gains approval from Shropshire Council. Bluefield says the Greete site was chosen for its seclusion, relatively poor soil quality and access to the grid. The proposal includes biodiversity and landscape enhancement measures, including hedgerow planting and filling gaps in existing hedgerows. Sheep may also be grazed ...

The train strike has already had a devastating impact on businesses and on the general public. Ed Davey has written an article in The Guardian under the headline: Johnson and Shapps pretend they can't end the rail strikes. That's nonsense. He writes: The Liberal Democrats are against the rail strikes and if a summer of discontent is not to turn into a winter of discontent and full-on stagflation, ministers must step back from the brink. The position of lower-paid workers across our country should be at the forefront of ministers' thinking - not that of the highest earners in the ...

At 10.15am she arrives at HQ with her sidekick, local Tory chairman Gillian Evans. As she enters the reception area, I follow her in. Immediately after identifying myself Ms Evans whisks her charge away to the back of the office. Two burly volunteers then block my path to her and tell me to leave, suggesting I get in touch with the press office to request an interview, something I have done on countless occasions over the past week. I ask to put just a couple of questions to Ms Hurford. "This is private property, please leave," says one of the ...

Responding to the latest ONS figures which saw inflation increase to 9.1% in May, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said: "Rishi Sunak is standing by while millions of people suffer from eye-watering levels of inflation - he either hasn't got any sense or any heart to not intervene. "This Chancellor has hiked taxes time and time again, refusing to slash them to help with the cost of living emergency. Even when we know slashing VAT is a sure-fire way to help families while keeping inflation under control. "Instead, the Chancellor, his Prime Minister and his colleagues continue to ...

Last year, a number of Newhall Gardens residents have contacted us about the need for a dog bin in the large grass strip along the centre of the street. The nearest such bin at present is in Riverside Drive, south of the entrance to the street, some distance away. This was agreed to but there was a lack of stock of bins at the time and dog bin locations are currently subject to a review. We asked the council to honour its promise to provide a bin and have now been advised : "In answer to your below email enquiry ...
