With Lord Bonkers back keeping an eye on his estate, things really are back to normal. And you know what this entry is? Topical satire, that's what. Locks, bars and bolts A working day on the Bonkers Hall Estate: the hedgerows are creamy with May blossom, the horse chestnuts are alight with candles and all is right with the world. When I call at one of my farms, the tenant is busy putting heavy-duty locks, bars and bolts on his tractor shed. He explains that of late he has been pestered by Conservative MPs, who hang about the place at ...

I visited Kibworth Books in its new premises today. You will find them at The Barn, 29 High Street, Kibworth Beauchamp, which is three times the size of the old shop. That shop, at 52 High Street, will reopen soon as a secondhand bookshop. There's more about Kibworth Books in the Harborough Mail.

The Leicester Mercury wins Headline of the Day, though our judges were heard muttering about it being a story from Bolton. There was talk of "clickbait" and tightening up the rules.

American Democrats have set up giant screens across key locations. Free ice cream is on offer and major political revelations are promised. Bennie Thompson, committee chairperson, has already accused ex-President Donald Trump of an "attempted coup." The Congressional committee investigating the 6 January Capitol Hill Riots is going public – in a big way. Trump and his army of supporters have dismissed the committee's hearings as a "political hoax." The first carefully choreographed hearings started on Thursday night. More are planned next week and later in the month. CBS, NBC and ABC are broadcasting the hearings live. Fox News will ...

I enjoy travel, as regular readers will testify. And it is as much the actual journey as the destination sometimes. It's not that being somewhere isn't enjoyable, but the process of travelling from A to B should bring some joy. A month ago, it was Europe Day and, to celebrate this and the fiftieth anniversary of the introduction of the Interrail ticket, there was a short lived offer of half-price Interrail tickets. So, I bought myself a one-month first class Interrail ticket, usage any time in the next year. Which brings me to a train somewhere in Hesse... I left ...

About ten years ago, I started drafting my "bucket list". A top item was to visit the Rosa Parks museum in wonderful Montgomery, Alabama, which I did a few years ago. Up there with Rosa was St Kilda. I started to read about these magical islands and their enchanting history of human habitation by the extraordinary St Kildans. The more I read, the more I became determined to pay a visit to that remote archipelago, some 110 miles off the coast of the Scottish mainland. They were continuously inhabited by self-reliant islanders for about two millennia from the Bronze Age ...

Just when we thought that the huge amount of public money wasted by this Tory Government could not be matched, it transpires that the Chancellor of the Exchequer has outdone himself. The Guardian reports that Rishi Sunak has been accused of wasting £11bn of taxpayers' money by paying too much in interest servicing the government's debt. The paper says that according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) the losses were the result of the chancellor's failure to insure against interest rate rises on £900bn of reserves created through the quantitative easing (QE) programme: The losses were ...

Scotland, the country that gave the world the Grand Theft Auto series and Minecraft on console. We have 147 game development companies, with over 2000 people employed in the industry. There's no doubt, over the past few years the gaming industry has grown exponentially. Recent industry-led reports have even shown that Scotland is growing faster than the rest of the UK. As a Games Designer and having worked in the industry the past few years, I'm worried about what the future may hold for our games. The video games industry in Scotland and the United Kingdom face massive funding shortages ...
