In the days when I was on the Liberal Democrats' federal policy committee, the members were invited to a breakfast meeting with Channel 4 at party conference each year. At one of these events I asked someone from the network why it didn't bring back the open-ended Saturday night discussion programme After Dark. He replied snootily: "We like to retire formats become they become tired." I should have replied: "What about the format where Z list comedians look at old TV clips and say 'Blue Peter was for posh kids. We watched Magpie.' That got tired years ago, didn't it? ...

Earlier this month the rail union RMT revealed plans by the rail industry for a cull of ticket offices across the network. It said over 1000 ticket offices are at impending risk of closure. I looked at their list for the Midland main line and, sure enough, Market Harborough is on the list of ticket offices due to go. But so are Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and St Pancras. It looks as though pretty much all ticket offices are to be closed. But isn't this what has already happened on the London Underground? Does it really matter. The independent campaign group ...

Planting Up Whickham

I was in Whickham yesterday with other volunteers from Planting Up Whickham to help plant up the flowerbeds on Front Street and Church Green. The group raises the money for the flowers and looks after the beds after the council stopped doing this about a decade ago. 2 hours of planting on a Sunday morning and the job was done.

As you might be aware, there is a ridiculously important by-election going on in Tiverton and Honiton, in our former heartlands of the West Country. More than that, we can win it and deliver the death knells to Boris Johnson's premiership and get our country back from the quasi-mob outfit currently running the show. However, to get a decent government of the United Kingdom back that doesn't deport refugees to Rwanda, we badly need to get down and volunteer in Tiverton and Honiton. Here are four ways you can help: Get down yourself, there are members willing to host volunteers, ...

Only a week or so ago, I sat down at our Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council Annual Meeting. I sat thinking whether I did the right thing. I sat wondering whether, after a 6 year gap, it was the right decision to stand again. One of the Labour Councillors, a really decent guy, said to me: "Michal, you've done it before. You really wanted to do it again? You are crazy". There were a few moments before the meeting, when I was reflecting on sacrifices that many of the Cllrs have to make. Most of us have to work, full or ...

Not much tends to happen here on a Bank Holiday, which makes the job of a Day Editor a mite easier. And then the Queen has a platinum jubilee and the usual schedule gets disrupted... And I ought to wish Her Majesty the very best on her big day – it really is remarkable that she has reigned for seventy years, demonstrating her sense of duty and adherence to a code of behaviour and decorum alien to her Prime Minister. She'll be a difficult act to follow and I do wonder what role a new monarch will have in a ...
