This is an enjoyable TEDx Talk - and it's always good to hear an expert endorse your prejudices. The blurb for it on YouTube runs: In this talk, Dr. Peter Gray compellingly brings attention to the reality that over the past 60 years in the United States there has been a gradual but, overall dramatic decline in children's freedom to play with other children, without adult direction. Over this same period, there has been a gradual but overall dramatic increase in anxiety, depression, feelings of helplessness, suicide, and narcissism in children and adolescents. Based on his own and others' research, ...

The Joy of Six 1052

Basic Income Conversation and Compass have published new research modelling a fiscally neutral basic income that could reverse the poverty and inequality rises of the last 45 years. Maxim Osipov describes the journey of those, like him, who chose exile rather than remaining as their country invaded Ukraine: "On the way to the airport, you drove through Moscow. Although this is where you were born, where you studied and lived, it has long been enemy territory. Parting with people is hard, nearly impossible; parting with Moscow is easy." "You might imagine that more conventional forms of modern therapy as delivered ...

Ed Davey spoke in the Commons following the Prime Minister's statement on the Sue Gray report. Boris Johnson is only sorry he got caught. He's not fit to be Prime Minister. He should resign, if he won't Conservative MPs should sack him. pic.twitter.com/PWK8CyO6Kx — Liberal Democrats (@LibDems) May 25, 2022 Meanwhile, Brian Paddick (who is our spokesperson on Home Affairs in the Lords), has taken legal action along with The Good Law Project over the failure of the Metropolitan Police to properly investigate Brian Johnson's attendance at three events which resulted in fines for other attendees. * Mary Reid is ...

The evidence was overwhelming before today that Johnson had been to parties when they were barred by his own government's rules. That's bad. With Sue Gray's report now before parliament and the public, it is clear if it wasn't before, that Johnson has repeatedly lied about parties and whether he attended any. That's seriously bad. Gray's report has now been published. Thirty-seven pages. Nine photos. Vomiting, red wine on the walls, fighting, sitting on laps, karaoke, pizzas, prosecco, birthday drinks, sleeping in the office, overflowing bins, leaving drunk by the back door to avoid the press pack outside the front ...

So let me give you two guesses. Am I talking about Liverpool, or Westminster here? Well ten out of ten to those who realised that I am talking about both. There are uncanny similarities between things that are playing out ... Continue reading →

We woke to the grim news this morning of another mass shooting in a school in the USA. Nineteen young children and two adults died in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in south Texas. The gunman, eighteen years old, had purchased two assault rifles and used them for a mass slaughter before being shot dead by police. President Joe Biden just back from Asia made an emotion speech. As a nation we must ask: When in God's name will we stand up to the gun lobby? When in God's name will we do what needs to be done? I'm ...

Partygate - what advice?

We are expecting Sue Gray's report today, so I thought you might like to be reminded of the advice we were being given by the Prime Minister during the pandemic. For example, this was from the very early days of lockdown. Don't break the rules. If you do, it won't just impact you. #StayHomeSaveLives pic.twitter.com/P0BBoJAk0y — UK Prime Minister (@10DowningStreet) April 15, 2020 * Mary Reid is a contributing editor on Lib Dem Voice. She was a councillor in Kingston upon Thames, where she is still very active with the local party, and is the Hon President of Kingston Lib ...

The Liberal Democrats have called on Boris Johnson to hand over the minutes of his meeting with Sue Gray to the Privileges Committee, which will be investigating whether Boris Johnson misled Parliament. The party is also calling for the records of contact between Downing Street and Sue Gray on her inquiry to be released to the Committee and made public, including emails, letters and messages. It comes following reports that the Prime Minister 'pressured' Sue Gray to drop her report in a recent meeting. Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Wendy Chamberlain MP commented: "The suggestion that Boris Johnson pressured Sue Gray ...

It was a pleasure last night for us both to attend the last Harris Academy Parent Council meeting of the current school term. This was the first parent council meeting that Fraser had been able to attend in-person since 2020 as all meetings have been on-line only during the COVID pandemic and this was Michael's first opportunity to attend a Harris Academy Parent Council meeting since his recent election to represent the West End on the City Council. The meeting was a 'hybrid' one, allowing the choice of attending on-line or in person and this worked extremely well. Very positive ...

Things are getting rather hot for Boris Johnson at the moment, and it doesn't look good for the Metropolitan Police and their apparently selective pursuit of the parties in Number Ten either. The Guardian says that Downing Street officials have started briefing the media anonymously, going so far as alleging partygoers in Downing Street were so cramped together at a leaving do attended by Boris Johnson that some were forced to sit on each other's laps: No 10 officials speaking anonymously to BBC Panorama said they sometimes arrived at work to find bins overflowing with empty bottles from parties the ...
