[IMG: Tim Prater] Lib Dem Group Leader Tim Prater once again led the push to change the system of governance at Folkestone and Hythe District Council at its AGM on Wednesday 4th May. The Council currently has "Cabinet" structure, with all members of the Cabinet appointed by the Council Leader. Since a motion put by Tim in September 2019 the Council has looked at options for its future Governance. At the AGM on May 4th, the Council finally debated those options, selecting between a more open Committee system and the existing Cabinet ystem. By the narrow margin of 16 votes ...
Three councillors have accused the Labour party of excluding women, Muslims and whole branches from the process to choose its next Leicester mayoral candidate so the incumbent, Sir Peter Soulsby, did not face a challenge. The Skwakbox has obtained a letter from the three Labour councillors (Rita Patel, Sharmen Rahman and Patrick Kitterick) to Keir Starmer in which they allege local Labour employees: excluded Muslims from selection votes by holding the votes during Ramadan, in a city with a high proportion of Asian residents in the UK, including in wards with some of the largest Muslim populations in the citydisadvantaged ...

The Guardian reports that hundreds of Tories are distancing themselves from Boris Johnson by standing as "Local Conservatives" in Thursday's council elections, with rebel MPs saying they will gauge support over the weekend for a move against the prime minister. The paper says that election leaflets they have seen show local candidates across England playing down their Tory affiliations, eschewing pictures of Johnson and styling themselves as "Local Conservative" on voting ballot papers. Apparently, conservative central office registered "Local Conservative" as an alternative title in early 2019, when Theresa May's unpopularity was at its height. It is being widely used ...

The polling stations are open. The kettle is on in committee rooms. Good Morning and GoTVs are being delivered. The knocker uppers are getting ready to get the straggling voters out. Votes will take place in all 32 councils in Scotland and all 22 councils in Wales. Elections are being held in 146 English councils, including all 32 boroughs in London. In Northern Ireland, voters will select 90 members of the Northern Ireland ...
It's polling day in the 2022 local elections. Polls are open until 10pm and you don't need your polling card to vote. May all polling stations be as nice as this one: If I was a voter here, I might just find excuses to dawdle before going to vote. #dogsatpollingstations pic.twitter.com/gd3SjO3Rd7 — Mark Pack [IMG: 🔶] (@markpack) May 5, 2022

Responding to George Eustice saying people could swap to value brands to weather the cost of living crisis, Liberal Democrat Work & Pensions spokesperson Wendy Chamberlain MP said: "These comments show George Eustice and the Conservatives are living in a parallel universe. Families and pensioners who can't afford their weekly shop need more help, not patronising advice from a clueless minister. "This is the stark reality of Boris Johnson's Britain. Oil and gas giants are raking in billions, while families are told to buy value food and pensioners are riding around on buses to keep warm."
