In 1972 Thomas Hale Boggs Sr was the Democratic majority leader in the House of Representatives and had been the youngest member of the Warren Commission, which investigated the assassination of President Kennedy. On 16 October of that year his plane disappeared over Alaska and the wreckage has never been found. This video tells the story and explores some conspiracy theories, but you sense its heart isn't in it and that it believes the weather was to blame.
Embed from Getty ImagesThe Liberal Party, largely in the shape of my hero J.W. Logan, held the Harborough constituency between 1891 and 1918, when its sitting member Percy Harris did not receive the "coupon" from Lloyd George's coalition with the Conservatives. But there was once last hurrah. In 1922 the Liberals won back Harborough with John Wycliffe Black as their candidate. Like many a Liberal who gained a seat in that year's general election, he was to lose it when another election was called the following year. Black died in 1951. Here is part of the report the Leicester Evening ...
Ed Davey calls for Windfall Tax on energy companies to help people cope with rising prices
Ed Davey went on BBC Breakfast this morning to call for a windfall tax on energy companies as BP announced soaring profits for the first three months on this year. Funds raised would be used to give people who are struggling with high bills "a really big tax cut." Ed said that the Conservatives were totally out of touch with what was going on in the country. After BP reported underlying profits of around £5bn, the Liberal Democrats are calling for a windfall tax on energy companies. The party leader Sir Ed Davey tells #BBCBreakfast the government needs to do ...
As Boris Johnson showcases his lack of understanding about the problems vulnerable people are facing as energy and food costs soar, Lib Dem Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper has highlighted that 2 million pensioners will not qualify for the Government's Council Tax rebate. The Prime Minister's interview on Good Morning Britain was a further embarrassment for the Government. Susanna Reid told him about Elsie, a 77 year old pensioner, who gets just the basic State Pension and whose energy bills have gone up from £17 per month to £85 per month. She doesn't qualify for the Council Tax rebate. She is ...
Overnight, Politico published a draft of a US Supreme court decision which, if confirmed, will end the right of American women to access abortion. This has been an inevitable trajectory since Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court in June 2018, giving Donald Trump the chance to ensure a conservative majority. During his term, Trump appointed three conservative justices, a move destined to roll back not just abortion rights, but potentially the right to same sex marriage as well. Ending the legal right to seek an abortion is a disaster for women. Before it was enacted, women ...
Who says that Honiton does not have a Liberal tradition? Admittedly it is going back a bit to the 18th century but Honiton did have a radical and liberal leaning MP then, Stockton born Brass Crosby. It was in the days of Rotten Boroughs, so you may say nothing to be proud of there, but that was the system that there was then, and to his credit, he was part of a group of leading City of London politicians that were calling for constitutional reform that included ending Rotten Boroughs. In 100 years' time it could be said that politicians ...

Responding to the announcement BP made profits of over $6 billion in the first quarter of 2022, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said: "The Conservative government's refusal to introduce a windfall tax on the super profits of oil companies is becoming impossible to justify. "BP is raking in eye-watering profits while millions of people struggle to pay the bills. It is an unforgivable lack of leadership from Boris Johnson at a time of national crisis. "Oil companies are handing out huge dividends and buying back shares, they could easily afford to pay a little more to help the most vulnerable." ...
As millions of people struggle to pay rising energy costs, it seems that those supplying gas and electricity are getting rich on the hardship of others. The Guardian reports that soarung oil and gas prices have led to BP's profits more than doubling to $6.2bn (£5bn) in the first three months of the year. The paper says that this surplus is well ahead of the $4.5bn expected by analysts and is likely to revive calls for a windfall tax on oil and gas companies from Labour and the Liberal Democrats, who argue the money raised could be used to ease ...

There is a lot of anger about the plans to force the very popular Golden Moments restaurant to close and for it to be converted back to a town house which it hasn't been for more than seven decades. Many will wish to comment on the application. I would encourage you do so. You don't need to know anything about planning. Just give your views. As a member of the Southern Planning Committee, I can reassure you that committee members and planning officers read all comments. To comment, you must be registered on Shropshire Council's planning portal. Click this link ...
Winlaton and High Spen ward continues to attract attention in the local elections in Gateshead. It seems the Conservatives are pouring in the resources. There have been two visits by cabinet members and I am informed that there have been visits by MPs recently. From having been rather complacent a few weeks ago, Labour may now be awake to the danger of losing to the Conservatives in the ward.
