I was at St Pancras Old Church yesterday - it's a short walk under a railway bridge from Camley Street Natural Park. You could have met the Beatles there, as the churchyard was one of the locations they took in on their 'Mad Day Out' on Sunday 28 July 1968. I once blogged about the event. This video recreates the loveable moptops' progress around the churchyard that day and includes many of the still photographs that were taken. I assume the audio comes from the film The Beatles: Get Back. There's a lot of restoration being done in the churchyard ...

Same person, same ward, but two nominations for this May's council elections in Flintshire, under different party names.

The French troop to the polls this Sunday to decide whether they want to turn the clock back to 19th century nationalism with a dash of racism, or opt for European supra-nationalism. Of course, very few French voters see the choice in those terms. Like most everyone everywhere, they are less concerned with big picture politics and more concerned with their pocket books and the spectre of the unknown. But like it or not, the outcome of the French elections will have a major impact on the big issues in France and – because of France's international role – the ...

The Guardian reports: The House of Lords commissioners for standards have launched an investigation into a second Conservative peer for allegedly breaching the rules against peers profiting financially from their membership of the Lords. The investigation into the Earl of Shrewsbury, an elected hereditary Conservative peer who has been a member of the Lords for 41 years, has been announced by the standards commissioners on their website. And if you follow the link to that website you find that the Earl is being investigated for: Alleged breaches of the following paragraphs of the House of Lords Code of Conduct: 9 ...

It was a relatively gentle start, which was welcome after I'd arrived in Zurich just in time to catch the last shuttle to my hotel the previous evening. And it's funny, isn't it, how after a period travelling anywhere new, your confidence over what, prior to the pandemic, had been a relatively straightforward journey, is slightly, if not shaken, then not quite what it had been. Arriving at an airport after 10.30 in the evening felt a bit "edge of the seat", even if I would have thought nothing of it a few years ago. But everything had worked, and ...

I doubt if there are any descriptions and expletives not used about the Rwanda offshore processing scheme. The scheme in which Priti Patel wants to pack off asylum seekers arriving here by unorthodox means. You can see the Liberal Democrats for Seekers of Sanctuary response to the proposal here: OFF SHORING PROCESSING OF ASYLUM SEEKERS IN RWANDA – STATEMENT FROM LD4SoS. She is demanding to know alternatives, and yes there are. They are firmly embedded in Lib Dem policy. The obvious one, most talked about, is Safe Routes for Refugees. This has been mooted by Lib Dems since we first ...

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has warned that Conservative MPs who are keeping Boris Johnson in his job are "guilty by association," adding they are "too ashamed to defend him but too weak to sack him." Ed Davey is calling on Conservative MPs to sack Boris Johnson so the government can focus on helping families facing a cost of living emergency. Speaking in Parliament yesterday, he singled out Conservative MPs from Winchester to Wimbledon whose constituents are furious about Boris Johnson breaking the rules and lying about it. Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said: "The country deserves a Government that ...

Things have been hectic for government ministers recently, what with all those lock-down partis, awkward questions, investigations, fines and, of course, Ukraine. Even so, that is no excuse for neglecting the fundamental duty of government, protecting the citizens of the Uk, in this case from the growing cost of living crisis that is engulfing us all. The Independent reports that the government's working group to address the cost living has not met for six months despite surging energy prices> The paper says that the inter-ministerial group on the cost of living last met in early November 2021 but has since ...
