Embed from Getty ImagesI've rarely heard him mentioned, but Alasdair Mackenzie was Liberal MP between 1964 and 1970. Reading his Wikipedia entry, I want to know more about him: At the 1964 general election Mackenzie was elected, at the age of 61 and contesting his first parliamentary election, as a Liberal for Ross and Cromarty. He defeated the sitting National Liberal obtaining a majority of 1407 votes. Initially he was denied admission to the House of Commons as he couldn't speak English and thus couldn't take the Oath of Allegiance. After Jeremy Thorpe arranged for Mackenzie to undergo quick lessons ...

Alex Cole-Hamilton and Lib Dem spokespeople and council candidates went up to the top of Calton Hill, overlooking Edinburgh city centre to launch our local government election campaign today. Here he is talking to the BBC calling for a cut to VAT, the SNP Government to cut rail fares as it has just taken over the Scotrail franchise and insulation for every home in Scotland. WATCH: at the Scottish Liberal Democrat campaign launch @agcolehamilton spoke to the BBC. We want to see a power surge to our councils away from Holyrood. We also want to see VAT cut to 17.5%, ...

Following up the earlier local election campaign launch in England, the Liberal Democrats have now formally* launched the party's Scottish campaign too: The Scottish Lib Dems have pledged to channel extra powers to local authorities as part of the party's campaign for May's elections... The Lib Dems wants to give councillors more control over funding, transport, planning, energy and housing. Leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said too many policies were set by central government ministers who are "far from the consequences of their decisions". He launched the party's manifesto for the elections on Wednesday morning, pledging to deliver a "power surge for ...

Thank you With nominations now closed for the May elections, many thanks to everyone who has put in so much work to getting candidates approved, selected and safely nominated. From a first look at the numbers, we've seen a good increase in our candidate totals in Scotland and Wales, with the numbers broadly the same in England compared with last time. I'm sure there will be lessons we can learn and share more widely from those areas that have had the most success increasing their candidate numbers, but that can wait until after the elections. For the moment, thank you ...

You might have been forgiven for not spotting one serious piece of news today that was not all about Johnson and Sunak. It was announced that inflation has risen to 7%, the highest rate in 30 years. The rise was partially driven by the hike in petrol prices, which of course have a knock-on effect on the prices of all consumer goods, including food. Ed Davey has been commenting on this to the media in between talking about partygate. He says: Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak are too busy trying to save their own jobs rather than saving pensioners and ...

Because my politics is not tribally based I hope I can try to look at the politics of other parties with at least a degree of objectivity. On this occasion, I want to look at the modern-day Conservative Party and contrast it with its not too distant past. I look upon the present-day Conservative Party as one which seems to present itself, almost proudly, as being the party of spivs and chancers. In my view, it's a very different beast from the former 'One Nation' Conservative Party of say Ken Clarke or John Major and the significant shift is possibly ...

Ed Davey has been busy appearing almost everywhere in the media in the last two days. This morning alone, Davey has spoken to BBC R4, BBC 5 Live, BBC Breakfast and Sky News. In this article, Newshound covers the interviews on Radio 4's Today programme and BBC Breakfast. On Today, Davey said that he was right to criticise the police originally. They changed their policy on the investigation and have since done the job well. The country is in crisis with the cost of living emergency and Ukraine. The prime minister and chancellor were dishonest. The trust in them that ...

Why Johnson must resign

In the grand scheme of things, the issuing of a £50 fixed penalty notice is not a huge matter, but in the case of the Prime Minister, it is a big deal. Johnson has been found not only to have broken laws he, himself, put in place, but in doing so has snubbed the thousands of UK citizens he is supposed to be leading, who sacrificed so much during the pandemic. Tory MPs, seeking to ingratiate themselves by defending the Prime Minister, have made things worse by comparing the lockdown parties to workplace celebrations, even going as far as to ...

Laws they wrote, and you followed. While we made countless sacrifices to protect each other, they were partying in Downing Street. They think they're above the law.Neither of them are fit to hold office. We want them gone. Today.

Responding to inflation reaching 7% this morning, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said: "Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak are too busy trying to save their own jobs rather than saving pensioners and families from spiralling prices."These new inflation figures are frankly frightening. Every day the cost of living crisis worsens yet our law-breaking leaders simply don't seem to care. This is no way to govern Britain."This country needs a new Chancellor in place next week to deliver an emergency budget to protect households on the brink. Pensioners and hard pressed families need urgent help with their energy bill ...
