The UK's First Trans MP

This morning the UK gained it's first out trans MP - Jamie Wallis. Quite frankly it's a burden off my shoulders, as the trans person who got the most votes in the 2019 General Election, and the second most in 2017. I'm sure that the media will find another way to make some trans person [...]

We have all been shocked (though perhaps not surprised) to learn of the bureaucratic processes that have faced Ukrainian refugees who want to come to the UK. New statistics on the Homes for Ukraine scheme reveal that fewer that 10% of applicants have been granted a visa. That actual figures are 2,700 visa issued against 28,300 applications under the Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme. Alistair Carmichael, our Home Affairs spokesperson said: More than 150,000 families are offering to welcome refugees into their homes, but the Conservatives are offering only red tape and delays. Their response has been appallingly slow and chaotic, leaving ...

Responding to new statistics on the Homes for Ukraine scheme which show that less than 10% of applicants have had a visa granted, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael MP said: "More than 150,000 families are offering to welcome refugees into their homes, but the Conservatives are offering only red tape and delays. Their response has been appallingly slow and chaotic, leaving thousands of Ukrainians in limbo trying to get a visa. "Ministers need to work harder and faster to match the compassion shown by the British public. "Ukrainian refugees should be allowed to come to the UK now, ...

Responding to Dominic Raab's claim on BBC Breakfast this morning that Boris Johnson told the truth "to the best of his ability", Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper MP said: "This pathetic excuse is an insult to the British people who made huge sacrifices during lockdown while those in Downing Street partied. "Boris Johnson broke the rules then repeatedly lied because he thought he could get away with it. Now he has been found out as a serial liar. "Attempts by Conservative ministers to rewrite history simply won't wash. Johnson has lost the trust of the British people and it's ...

House of Commons Library Research commissioned by the Liberal Democrats has revealed that 28% of all murder cases since 2016 are women murdered by men. Since the brutal murder of Sarah Everard last year in March, the data show that 109 women have been murdered where men were the main suspect. This is out of 414 murder victims overall, equalling 26% of all murder cases. Liberal Democrat Women and Equalities Spokesperson, Wera Hobhouse MP has slammed the Government for turning a blind eye to anti-women hatred and refusing to take violence against women and girls seriously. Liberal Democrats have accused ...

Partygate continues to inhabit every nook and corner of Boris Johnson's premiership like a bad smell. Despite attempts by number 10 and Tory MPs to portray the PM as a 'war leader', albeit a less than average one, in an attempt to deflect attention from the bad news, he just can't get rid of the stink. The affair resurfaced again today with the news that the Metropolitan Police have issued the first 20 fines to those involved in partying through lockdown at 10 Downing Street. Rather bizarrely, the police have not named the recipients of these penalties, creating potential for ...

The Ockenden Report, to be published this morning, was commissioned by Jeremy Hunt in 2017 after the parents of babies who died in the care of Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospital Trust (SATH) were distraught about the uncaring response of staff to their bereavement. Concerns were also raised about the numbers of preventable baby deaths. The Ockenden review, which investigated 1,862 cases, will add to several recent reports detailing catastrophic failures within other NHS Trusts. This article sets out the wider context for the failures at SaTH and makes recommendations for improvements to the way that care and safeguarding is ...

A resident recently wrote to me to advise : "My children attend the Busy Bees nursery by Ninewells Hospital and are dropped off and picked up on foot most days. However, this is a daily struggle, as there is no pedestrian crossing that allows safe crossing of Ninewells Drive into Thomas Wise Place. At busy times, we often stand by the side of the road for 5-10 minutes whilst holding on to small people! This is clearly an unsafe situation and I worry it is only a matter of time before it goes wrong. And I'm certainly not alone in ...

This video from Jago Hazzard reveals that what we know as the Chessington Branch was originally meant to be a secondary main line to Leatherhead. Some work took place beyond Chessington South, as Wikipedia explains: Work to extend beyond Chessington was halted by the outbreak of World War II, with track laid beyond Chessington South as far as Chalky Lane, and preparatory works continuing further south. This included an embankment built by the Royal Engineers as a military exercise from Chalky Lane as far south as Chessington Wood, close to where the next station at Malden Rushett would have been ...
