The Liberal Democrats are calling on Priti Patel to withdraw the Nationality and Borders Bill in light of the war in Ukraine and ensuing refugee crisis. MPs are set to debate some of the Bill's most controversial aspects in the House of Commons tomorrow, including Government plans to: Criminalise refugees simply for coming to the UK to seek asylum. "Offshore" asylum seekers by sending them to another country while their claims are processed. Create a second class of refugees with fewer rights and only temporary protection. The Liberal Democrats worked with others in the House of Lords to pass amendments ...
Responding to the Metropolitan Police update on their investigation into lockdown parties in Number 10, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said: "At a time of war in Europe and a cost-of-living crisis, Conservative MPs are keeping a criminal in Number 10. They can try and call it 'fluff', but everyone is seeing through Boris Johnson's lies. "Johnson must come clean: is he being interviewed by the police and will he resign if found to have broken the law? No more fluff, just the facts for all those who suffered during lockdown while he partied."
"Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand modern politics ... comprehensive yet surprisingly fun" – Sunday Times One of the "Most Anticipated Books of Spring 2022" – Reaction Rather excited to see that after both the fun and the slog of writing it, my next book is now available to order: a guide to and history of political opinion polls. As the blurb says: Opinion polls dominate media coverage of ...
Using up fresh fruit I am sure I am no different to other families and find fruit past its best lingering in the fridge or fruit bowl. I can't bear throwing fruit away so as the proud owner of a juicing machine I recently turned a glut of oranges and wrinkly clementines into juice. I [...]
Questions for Liverpool and Everton fans to think about on sponsorship and investment issues
When Russia first invaded Ukraine in an act of war, I challenged the relationship between a Russian oligarch, Mr Usmanov, and both the sponsorship of and investment in the club. A few fans got very upset about this and claimed ... Continue reading →

This post first appeared on the Radix UK blog Why are we so sick these days? I mean, really? It wasn't suppose to be like this - thanks to Beveridge, we had assumed that when you start treating people for free then it should cost less, year on year to keep people healthy. But it hasn't worked out like that anywhere. Of course, there are conventional reasons why health is so expensive - from changing diseases to the survival of more premature babies. But I don't think any of those are really adequate explanations. There seems to be something about ...
I am, I freely admit, not a fan of the "strong leader" school of local government. As a liberal, I believe in sharing power, in encouraging others to act for themselves as far as possible rather than create dependency. And, as a lifelong bureaucrat, I don't really see myself as a leader anyway. And, for that reason, I've tended to yield to others who want power more than I do. There are, perhaps, opportunities that I have missed through reticence but, on the whole, I know my strengths and cleave to them like a hermit crab does to its shell, ...
Responding to the Chancellor Rishi Sunak's failure to answer how many people are being pushed into fuel poverty on the BBC's Sunday Morning show, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine said: Rishi Sunak doesn't even care enough to find out how many people he is condemning to fuel poverty. It shows he is completely out of touch with families worried sick about how to cope with soaring energy bills. People are desperate for help but the Conservatives' response is to clobber them with an unfair tax rise. The Chancellor should use this week's Spring Statement to put money back into ...
Do you run one or more Liberal Democrat social media accounts, such as a Twitter account for a local party or a Facebook page for a regional party?
The Liberal Democrats have accused Chancellor, Rishi Sunak of imposing a 'stealth tax' that will result in nearly 125,000 more of the poorest workers paying National Insurance: The Mirror reports that the minimum salary at which workers pay the soon-to-be-hiked tax is rising from £9,568 to £9,880 a year next month, that is an increase of 3.1%, despite inflation running at 5.5%, and there are fears price rises could soon top 8%: House of Commons Library research for the Lib Dems found between 95,000 and 125,000 fewer people would have to pay National Insurance if the threshold rose by 7.25% ...
It is sometimes hard to appreciate just how broken our politics is. With a Government determined to remove or destroy all of the guard rails that protect us – independent supervision of our elections, an unbiased state broadcaster, limits on campaign spending that prevent the wealthy from buying their way to power – and seemingly able to lie without restraint or conscience about anything and everything, it is perhaps unsurprising that they seem capable of defying what we traditionally thought of as political gravity. It is as though Wilkins Micawber was not only justified in his belief that "something would ...
