Ukraine: UK compromised.

Two days before the Russians actually invaded Ukraine Prime Minister Johnson was on the airwaves and warned, not once, but twice, that if President Putin ordered such an invasion that would be "against international law." It seems he doesn't do irony. A report in the Guardian gives details of contributions by Russian (or ex-Russian - some have taken British citizenship) have contributed to the Tory party. Here are thee details: Mr Luboy Chernukhin: £700 000 Mr Alexander Temerko: £357 000 Mr Mohamed Amersi £258 000 These and other donors claim that they have no influence whatsoever over Tory party or ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:'I'm looking for a record for my daughter. For her birthday. "I Just Called To Say I Love you". Have you got it?'Rob is thirty-five, about to turn thirty-six, and has just split up with Laura, who has moved in with the bloke who used to live upstairs. His North London record shop is failing, and so frankly is he. He revisits the five worst break-ups he has ever had, has a fling with an American musician, and then renews contact with Laura, and together they find a redemption for him. It's actually rather sweet and ...

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has called for an 'oligarch tax' to offset increased gas prices at a time when households are already facing a cost of living crisis. The Liberal Democrats said this would ensure that Putin's cronies and Russian energy companies foot the bill for any gas price spike following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The oligarch tax would comprise of two elements: Freezing and beginning the process of seizing the assets of Putin's cronies who have money and property in the UK, using Unexplained Wealth Orders. A windfall tax on oil and gas superprofits, including those of Russian ...

The death of 12-year-old Dennis O'Neill on a farm in the Shropshire hills in 1945 created a national scandal and led to the reform of the law on the fostering of children. It was also the genesis of Agatha Christie's famous play The Mousetrap and of No Room at the Inn, a play and film I recently came across. But did the boy's death make a mark on the work of Malcolm Saville, my favourite author as a child, who set many of his books in just this part of the world. I discussed this question in an article in ...

Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine has thrown the world back in time to a world order based on the dangerous dictum: might is right. We have been pushed through the looking glass into a new world where laws and treaties are irrelevant and life and death decisions are made on the basis of blatant lies and where the morally bankrupt prevail. Overshadowing this frightening reality is that Vladimir Putin has his finger on the button that controls the world's largest nuclear arsenal. Facing this disaster scenario is an unprepared West. For years it has over-focused on the economic challenge of ...

While I enjoy exercising, the thought of launching into something rigorous first thing in the morning is a complete put-off. I much prefer a gentler start to the day before the frenetic pace of work kicks in. This is my recommended morning video for midlifers. The stretch and mobility exercises are simple and easy to ... I've spent enough time – not much time, but enough time – reading contemporary media coverage of military events to know how uncertain a guide they can be even when propaganda has not fictionalised the accounts. Reports of dramatic advances when the history books tell us about slow, nearly stalemated conflict. Talks of victorious counter-attacks when the history books tell us about overwhelming, rapid defeat. So it's wise to remember how little I or nearly every reader of this knows about what is actually happening and whether Russia's invasion of Ukraine is seriously faltering or just taking a few days ...

On Thursday, Shropshire Council debated a petition from Ludlow resident Darren Childs. The petition requests that the Council support our campaign in returning an ambulance hub back in Ludlow, South Shropshire or the return of local rapid response vehicles who can be on call or based at local areas like Ludlow hospital, GP surgery, fire station, to attend until an ambulance arrives. Councillors debated the petition for longer than the allocated time of 15 minutes and concluded by unanimously supporting it. Key points made by councillors during the discussion were: All the rural ambulance hubs should be reinstated Scrutiny had ...

The Independent reports that an armed forces minister has paid tribute to protesters in Russian cities demonstrating in open defiance of Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin's bloody invasion of Ukraine. The paper says that the comment comes after images and videos emerged of protests erupting in cities including the capital of Moscow, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg — chanting slogans such as "No to war!": Police were swift to clamp down on the protest and have so far arrested 1,667 people at protests in 53 cities, the OVD-Info rights monitor, which tracks arrests at opposition rallies said. Addressing the protests, after ...
