If you want to understand the history of Ukraine, and its relationship with Russia in particular, then this podcast is invaluable. It was recorded before today's Russian invasion.

The Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey issued this statement following Boris Johnson's television address to the nation this morning: At this dark moment we must renew our commitments of international cooperation and stand with our allies against this horrendous invasion. For too long we in the West have been complacent about the threat which Putin poses to our allies and to the fundamental values which underpin our way of life. No more. We must stand with the people of Ukraine and provide them with humanitarian and military aid, while unleashing the severest of sanctions against Putin and his cronies. The ...

Responding to the additional sanctions on Russian companies and individuals announced today by Boris Johnson, Liberal Democrat Leader and former Energy Secretary Ed Davey said: The absence of Gazprom and Rosneft, part-owned by BP, in today's sanctions list is the elephant in the room. The UK must do everything we can to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. Russia's state-owned oil and gas giants stand to profit from this war and soaring prices. We must start treating Putin's Russia like the rogue state it is and immediately cut off UK investment in these firms. * Newshound: bringing you ...

Sometimes, particularly if you live far away from the country of your origins, it might seem that there is very little that we can practically do to support those in need. However, sometimes it is equally important to: * Simply be * Show solidarity with our fellow human beings * Demonstrate that local and global unity might bring some hope * Support members of our community; often our friends, neighbours or work colleagues, who feel angry, confused or devastated Join me in solidarity with Ukraine on Saturday (26th February) at 4pm. We are meeting around the fountain in Welwyn Garden ...

Second paragraph of third chapter: ずにガラスー面に張りついている。 The clock said four, but the window was a flume of sunshine. This was one of my impulse purchases in Paris last summer, arising from the realisation that I haven't read a lot of non-genre fiction by Asian women, and seduced by the blurbs on the front cover. It's a story in two parts, the first being a visit by the narrator's sister from Osaka to Tokyo for a breast reduction operation, the second about the difficulties of the narrator getting access to artificial insemination as a single woman who does not like ...

Yesterday, I was pleased to join forces with our Lib Dem Peers at the second reading of the Elections Bill at the House of Lords. For us at Lib Dems Abroad, the Elections Bill is a gamechanger that will bring us into the campaigning mainstream of the party. A huge 8% of all Brits are living outside the UK. The likely abolition of the 15-year rule will allow all Brits abroad of voting age the right to register and vote at the next UK General Election. Our members, led by the three "local" party chairs - Lib Dems in Europe ...

Thoughts on Ukraine

My mother and her parents were bundled out of India with three weeks' notice in 1947. They left behind money, belongings and status, to arrive in a country they thought they knew but found that they didn't, where they had to rely on family to house them. Both sides of my mother's family had lived [...]

A new campaign to encourage people to apply for jobs in the NHS or social care launches today in east Kent. Ready to care is a recruitment campaign by the East Kent Health and Care Partnership - a coalition of NHS, Kent County Council, social care and voluntary sector organisations in east Kent. It is designed to encourage anyone who can bring life skills and experience, rather than formal qualifications, to apply for entry-level care and support roles, and start a rewarding career. Susan Acott, CEO of East Kent Hospitals' University NHS Foundation Trust, which is part of the partnership, ...

With Russia having launched its assault on Ukraine last night, one would expect that the UK Government will ratchet up the sanctions against Putin and his pals in government. However, it seems that there is one area Boris Johnson will not venture into, even though it has the potential to be especially painful. As the Mirror reports, Boris Johnson is relaxed about Russia-linked cash flowing into Tory coffers and won't review the Conservative Party's policies. The Prime Minister is under pressure to order party chiefs to hand back around £2m of donations from Russia-linked sources given to the party since ...

Zealots

Zeal brings comfort in simple certainty:slamming all-in, the grace of balance lost, bathed in delight that othered victims bled; yet so ridiculous that people ina present narrow view of historydare apply the methods of the witch-hunt, which they of course explicitly decry,to anyone ~whose lives or roles were ever differentfrom shallow fervid fond imaginings; as if we were [...]

The i reports: People who receive a carer's allowance to help look after their vulnerable family members could need to spend a fifth of the benefit on lateral flow tests, new analysis suggests. Free universal Covid testing will end in April, and Boots have announced their plan to charge £5.99 for a single test. Analysis by the Liberal Democrats, based on official figures, shows that taking twice-weekly tests would cost a carer £622.96 a year, nearly 20 per cent of their annual carer's allowance of £3,250. Ed Davey says: It is simply unjust and unfair to force people to pay ...

Many thanks to the residents who recently highlighted to me that one of the two bollards on Perth Road near the bottom of Ryehill Lane (just west of Dil Se restaurant) was missing. I reported this to the Roads Maintenance Partnership and also asked them to repair the grating adjacent to the bollards as it was knocked off and needed reinstated.

You know things are bad when you wake in the early hours and hear the announcement on the BBC World Service that it is to broadcast rolling news from 4am. There is almost no space for other news items other than the situation in Ukraine. As in the early days of any war, reports are partial, sometimes confused, sometimes contradictory and sometimes downright lies. This is war in Europe and the full impact of the conflict cannot yet be predicted. We will be adding reactions from Lib Dems to the conflict throughout the day. This is the darkest day for ...
