It's been another interesting and eventful week. Cheers to Bhavin Dedhia, Anne Blake-Coggins and Nicole Hawkins after their respective council by-election wins this week. Two gains and a hold are testament to some fantastic local compaigning. Cheers for Stevo Pendraovski, the President of North Macedonia, who walked 11-year-old Embla Ademi to school after she had been bullied for living with Down's Syndrome. The President held her hand and talked with her parents about the challenges she faced. It was a terrific gesture that helped to strip away the stigma and raise awareness. Cheers to Tottenham Hotspur, who have asked fans ...
Thank you for the lovely feedback from so many readers of Liberal Democrat Newswire and my other email lists, such as: "Love the comprehensive by-election results coverage." "Thank you. It's a great resource." "Full of interest, well written and well presented. Many thanks!" After an (understandable!) dip following the 2019 general election, readership has picked up sharply and more people are now reading my monthly newsletter than ever before. But you know what's also up? Costs, alas. In particular, a combination of MailChimp price rises and of previous price discounts expiring means that core cost is up 45% over the ...

Howl's Moving Castle won the 2006 Nebula Award for Best Script, beating Batman Begins, a Battlestar Galactica episode and Doctor Who's "The Girl in the Fireplace". It came nowhere near the Hugos, probably the farthest away from the Hugo Awards of any Nebula-winning film (I have not checked), with 58 nominating votes where 92 would have been needed to get on the 2006 ballot, beaten not only by the finalists but also by Peter Jackson's King Kong. IMDB counts it as a 2004 film, where it is ranked respectably, 13th on one list, 20th on the other, behind The Incredibles ...
Campaign Technology is one of the most important things for the Liberal Democrats to get right. Whether it's canvassing apps, websites or even data entry, we can't campaign effectively without the right tools and the right data. Over the last 18 months, the LDHQ technology team has been reviewing our data, technology and tools. We've also been gathering feedback from the people who use them to help us understand where the problems are at the moment. That process has identified a number of problems with our current setup, including: We aren't getting value for money from our campaigning technology Our ...

The Anglo-American special relationship is growing closer—but not for the right reasons. It has been founded on shared values, history, legal structures, trade, military and intelligence links and an unwavering belief in the democratic institutions which underwrite all of the above. Today the democratic cornerstone is being undermined by the actions of conservative-minded political parties in both countries– America's Republican Party and Britain's Conservative and Unionist Party. They have veered away from the responsibilities of political stewardship to the naked pursuit of power at all costs and tied their fortunes to personalities rather than policies. Both parties have adopted standard ...
Why do the Liberal Democrats deliver so many leaflets? Do they work? And is there such a thing as too many leaflets?
With the Tories in disarray, and the Prime Minister under pressure to resign, one would think that Labour were on a high. Unfortunately for them, that does not appear to be the case. Not only are they struggling to get the sort of commanding lead in the opinion polls needed to oust Boris Johnson at the next election and secure their own majority, but Keir Starmer's party is beset by internal squabbles of its own. The Independent reports that Labour are facing bankruptcy as its biggest union donor, Unite, says it could pull its remaining support. The paper quotes the ...
It could not be better news on a cold winter's morning with heavy rain forecast for tomorrow. But before you hibernate under a duvet, you might wish to celebrate the saving of the meadow on Castle View Terrace. A planning inspector has thrown out an appeal against Shropshire Council's refusal of planning permission for six homes in December 2020. Residents mounted a strong and successful campaign against the Shropshire Homes scheme. They took professional advice and weathered the stress that many residents feel when unwanted and unwarranted development is proposed on their doorstep. The planning inspector noted the "extensive and ...
Last year, at the request of residents, I raised with the City Council the inadequate lighting in the Miller's Wynd car park. At the time I received the following helpful reply from the council's Team Leader for parking and sustainable transport : "My colleague from the Street Lighting Partnership went out to the Miller's Wynd car park last week to assess the situation. He reported that while there is power to the lighting column that holds the floodlights, it is difficult to access because of the trees and therefore almost impossible to replace the lanterns safely. He has recommended an ...
