Happy LGBT+ History Month! January this year has been horrible in so many ways. It has seemed even longer and more tortuous than usual. But now February is here and there are many things to cheer us – it's not dark at 5pm, pancake day is not far away and it's LGBT+ History Month, a chance to learn about those whose stories may have been hidden. Today is the first day of #LGBTHistoryMonth #LGBTHM22 LGBT+ people have always been part of our societies, but often their stories are hidden and go untold. This month is an opportunity to discover, explore ...
The Liberal Democrats have reported both the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary to the statistics watchdog for falsely claiming a reduction in overall crime levels. Alistair Carmichael, the party's Home Affairs Spokesperson, has written to Sir David Norgrove, Chair of the UK Statistics Authority, about comments made by Boris Johnson in the House of Commons yesterday and by Priti Patel in a Home Office press release last week. During his statement on the Sue Gray investigation, Johnson claimed "we have been cutting crime by 14%". In a press release on Thursday, Patel said "This Government continues to cut crime ...

Second paragraph of third chapter (a long one, spread across two pages, which is why the footnote numbers are repeated):It is true that thanks to the dangers and squalors of the [tenth] century, invasion, rebellion and faction, there is no longer, at any rate in France and England, an educated society. One misses the voluminous correspondence of the ninth century, of Alcuin and his Venerable Fowl, of Hrabanus Maurus, of Servatus Lupus, hoarding manuscripts like a magpie and clamouring like Petrarch for more. There is scholarship, but it is not present diffusedly. Bruno, young brother of Otto the Great and ...
On the i wesbsite, Richard Vaughan reports: The Liberal Democrats are targeting Tory MPs representing the "Blue Wall" in the Southern shires demanding they submit a letter of no confidence in Boris Johnson or face being "sacked by the public". Senior Conservatives including former Prime Minister Theresa May, Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove and the Justice Secretary Dominic Raab are among 54 MPs singled out by the campaign. The seats have been selected because Savanta ComRes polling conducted by the Lib Dems shows that a third (32 per cent) of those who voted Conservative at the last election are now ...
Not even an apology! – And I'm not referring to Boris Johnson's statement on Sue Gray's Report. Boris did at least say the word "sorry", even though it was an inadequate, half hearted "apology". But Sajid Javid made no apology at all, when he made his statement in parliament announcing that the government was scrapping the policy of mandatory vaccines for NHS staff, and for staff in care homes and other care workers. Around eighty thousand NHS staff would have been told, on February 3rd, that they would lose their jobs. Not for any wrongdoing or incompetence - many had ...
Whenever Lib Dems talk about what we would want to do when we are in Government again, Constitutional Reform always comes up. PR for elections to the Commons, an Elected Second Chamber and Devolution to the English Regions are the normal areas that get mentioned. I would like to raise another are we should also be talking about as part of a new constitutional settlement, electing our Head of State. Having a Hereditary Monarch is something that should not fit well with a Party that believes in rejecting "all prejudice and discrimination based upon race, ethnicity, caste, heritage, class, religion ...
Quoits must be one of the easiest games to play. You take aim and throw. If your rope ring doesn't land around a pole you can simply laugh, as I do, at your lousy aim and try again. I was tremendously fortunate to have had the opportunity to sample a beautifully crafted Quoits set. In ... Not a word I'm guessing that many folk would associate with Boris Johnson yet it was uttered by an elector who'd supported/voted for his leadership of the Tories at the last General Election. The context of the remark was indeed remarkable, to me anyway, in that the person using the word was seemingly saying that they had expected decency from Johnson. What struck me about this was why on earth would anyone expect decency from Johnson? And thereby hangs the cult of Johnson who often seems to be imagined as a person significantly different from the one we see on ...

Well, the Sue Gray report is now out in the open and we are still waiting. We are waiting for the Metropolitan police, whose convenient, last minute intervention after weeks of denial effectively tore the meat out of Gray's report. We are waiting for Boris Johnson to finally tell the full truth in the House of Commons, instead of the bluster and obfuscation he delivers at the despatch box. And we are waiting for Tory MPs to grow a set of balls and finally give Johnson his marching orders. Having said all that, the Gray report told us nothing new. ...
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has demanded that Boris Johnson must not be able to use taxpayers' cash to fund his legal advice over the police investigation into law-breaking parties held in Downing Street. Ed Davey has written today to Treasury Solicitor Susanna McGibbon, who oversees the Government Legal Department, calling on her to ensure Boris Johnson does not receive taxpayer-funded legal advice or representation from government lawyers in relation to his alleged breaches of Covid laws. The letter adds that it would be "completely unacceptable for taxpayers to bear the cost of the Prime Minister trying to defend himself ...
