I've been in some discomfort, and occasionally pain, for a few weeks now. I'd not been in Maine for very long when the weather took a turn for the worse, with heavy snow making walking difficult. The converted barn we had rented was lovely, but the driveway had become somewhat icy and, having returned from an expedition into Portland, I was heading for the front door when I suddenly found myself moving dramatically in an unintended direction, landing rather heavily on my right shoulder. I lay there on my back, turtle like, for a moment or two, cursing the fates, ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:He'd dragged himself awake that morning with great diffs, head thick and sluggy deepdown in his brow-ridge, and fully been unable to recall the evening he'd made of it with Sinovi and Hekate. He guessed waragi, ouzo and / or substances akin had been attendant. His timebeast head, as well as previous experience of Hek and Sino, suggested so.I'm afraid this is the end of the line for my reading of Faction Paradox. The City of the Saved is a place where all humans who have ever lived or died are resurrected; but they then engage ...

[IMG: Napier Barracks, Folkestone] The Government has launched a planning consultation for the extension of the use of Napier Barracks to house asylum seekers until 2026 (!) The consultation closes on 30th January 2022. The decision to use the site for up to a further 5 years was made by the Home Office in August last year without carrying out a consultation. District Councillor for Sandgate and West Folkestone, Tim Prater, commented: "The use of Special Development Order to grant themselves planning permission for Napier Barracks for the next five years, without consultation with the community, was outrageous. "Local ...

I am writing this as news comes in that Warrington Council has become the second Council in England to lose a shed load of money by establishing a company, Together Energy', to sell electricity. Apparently, the full amount is not ... Continue reading →

The Independent reports on the government's UK Climate Change Risk Assessment which argues that ministers must go "further and faster" to prepare for the impacts of warmer temperatures caused by the climate crisis. The new report says "stronger or different" government action was needed to tackle more than 30 climate-related risks in the next few years, including over coastal flooding, public water supplies and health, adding that it would cost billions every year to deal with the impacts of the climate emergency by the mid-century: "We have clear evidence demonstrating the pace of warming in recent decades and the impacts ...

I don't know why, but I always had a "soft spot" for diversity. When I was growing up in Poland in the 1990's, due to years of communism and oppression, Poland and Lublin weren't the most diverse places on earth, however even then, I noticed signs and opportunities to build dialogue with minority groups and organisations. As a member of the Focolare Movement, one of my earliest recollections of taking an active part in an event, which was celebrating diversity, was the Week of Christian Unity. I found it absolutely fascinating when, every January, I had a real privilege to ...

It's been a while since I dusted off my keyboard and put my thoughts down via this blog. In truth, I haven't felt terribly engaged nor have I had much that seemed worth writing down. And that's ironic, because the blog has never been a means of self-promotion. At least, if it was, I've done a pretty useless job of it! There have been times when there has been so much happening that this was a useful means of recording everything that was going on - Ros's wildly successful campaign to become Party President, for example. And, as a means ...

It's going to be an interesting day. Has Boris Johnson finally run out of road? For the second Wednesday in a row, his future is under intense threat as his own MPs turn on him over the Downing Street parties. A weekend in their constituencies has left many Tories in marginal seats in no doubt about how angry their voters feel about Downing Street's cavalier attitude to the rules they set for us all to follow. Twitter is awash with speculation about "pork pie" plots to oust him and Operation Red Meat to save him. Will he even make it ...

Responding to new record high inflation rates, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said: "Inflation rates are at a record high and continuing to climb. This Conservative Government is too busy clearing up their own Downing Street mess to look after families that are struggling with the rising cost of living. "People are facing soaring energy bills and tax hikes while their wages stay stagnant. The Government has left behind low and middle income families who will feel the brunt the most. "This Government has done absolutely nothing to help UK households who face years of tax rises and ...

The UK Government has confirmed that it is only going to raise benefits by the rate of inflation last September. This is what it normally does. However, it looks like inflation is going to almost double between September and April, when the changes take place. The Government will be putting an order before Parliament to raise benefits by 3.1% which is not much good when inflation is expected to be 6% by April. If you think about how energy costs are soaring, this is really going to impact on disabled people. They tend to have higher heating bills to start ...

Excessive noise from vehicles is a problem in most of the market towns in Shropshire, and in many villages too. The noise comes from several sources including cars with modified engines and exhausts and motorbikes revving up to maximise noise. In Ludlow, as in other towns, we have long had issues with young racers rushing around the town and the Eco Park and with a minority of motorcyclists making excessive noise. Last Thursday, Shropshire Councillors agreed to seeking funding for an acoustic camera trial in Shropshire, with a view that is the scheme is successful, it would be rolled out ...
