Second paragraph of third chapter:She was not obliged to go to the Tredgold College, because as yet the College had not settled down for the session. She was supposed to be reading at home, and after breakfast she strolled into the vegetable garden, and having taken up a position upon the staging of a disused greenhouse that had the double advantage of being hidden from the windows of the house and secure from the sudden appearance of any one, she resumed the reading of Mr. Manning's letter.Latest in my slow procession through the novels of H.G. Wells. This is a ...

I am very far from being any kind of an expert in trade. My policy is to rely on comparative advantage; spend less time on it and rely on others to do the work, more efficiently. My familiarity with the topic goes only as far as some of the obvious signposts: apart from Ricardo's comparativeContinue reading "Lord Frost, and whether/how lower trade makes us poorer"
We can't have enough of Helen Morgan here on Lib Dem Voice. What a Christmas present! With Sarah Green's win in Chesham and Amersham, we are beginning to build our strength on the national political scene. This morning, Helen spoke to Adam Green and Joanne Gallagher on BBC Radio Shropshire. It was a very human interview covering the practicalities everyone faces on the first day in a new job. Helen said that one of her first priorities will be to write to Sajid Javid about the health crisis, which is nationwide but worse here in Shropshire. She promised to work ...

So here we have it our round of Super Thursday! Marginals galore, incumbents getting stuffed even before the turkeys have been carved and a whole host of gains, holds, flips and squeezes. With the potent backdrop of North Shropshire in the atmosphere, you wouldn't be forgiven for taking your gaze from this week's by-elections but fear not we have all the details of all sixteen polls from Thursday night's action. Most notably then, the Lib Dems ushered in the close of the year with fantastic gains in Roffey South, West Lindsey and last but not least a Lib Dem gain ...
There was a disturbing article in the Independent a few days ago which outlined concerns by experts and campaigners that a plan by Boris Johnson's government to change the regulation of chemicals after Brexit risks making the UK a "dumping ground" for harmful substances. The paper says that the government's policy paper setting out how the UK's new, post-Brexit chemical safety regime will diverge from the EU's REACH system, shows that of ten potentially hazardous chemicals added to Brussels' list of "substances of very high concern" this year, only four would be added to the UK's list: Campaigners told The ...
West Bank settlements, Liberal values, and our Israeli sister party: time for a realignment
Our Autumn Conference passed a motion entitled 'Towards a lasting peace in Israel and Palestine'. Critically, the motion was amended, calling for legislation 'to cease trade with illegal settlements, unless and until a negotiated peace settlement is reached'. Speaking for this amendment, I argued that the UK has obligations under international humanitarian law to refrain in any manner from supporting illegal settlements and must therefore cease trading with them; and that if we are to retain the hope of reaching a two-state solution, it is critical to reject a one-state reality and uphold the legal – and moral – distinction ...
Greetings from Westbrook, Maine, where your friendly neighbourhood Day Editor is on grand-parenting duty for a few days. As you can see from this picture of the town's library, we've had snow, about six inches of it. Luckily, it seems as though most people here own a snowplough, or have one bolted to the front of their truck, so there hasn't been much disruption. As I left Britain, the news of the North Shropshire by-election was just beginning to sink in and I'm reminded a bit of the 1992-97 Major administration. In the sense of a Government out of good ...
