I welcome guest posts on Liberal England and am happy to publish ones on subjects far beyond the Liberal Democrats and British politics. In fact I could do with some guest posts. I am now a full-time carer, which means I am struggling to find the time to come up with longer posts. If you would like to write for this blog, please send me an email so we can discuss your idea or DM me on Twitter. MyLondon reports: Former Conservative mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey AM has quit as chair of the London Assembly's policing body, following revelations he attended a rule-breaking Christmas party last year... Calls for him to resign have become deafening after the Conservatives admitted last Wednesday that an event organised by Shaun Bailey's then-mayoral campaign took place in the party's Westminster HQ on December 14 last year – despite a ban on mixing between households in the capital. Mr Bailey attended the party, held by his campaign team who were working in the basement at the time, the Times reported. Four of Shaun ...

Second frame of third chapter: Captain Cartier: No, I haven't myself... but scientists have detected a significant underground mass, exactly where you predicted, yes. Third and final volume of the award-winning bande dessinée series, of which I very much enjoyed volume 1 and volume 2. We start a year on from previous events, with the reappearance of the mysterious Umo, an enigmatic huge extraterrestrial entity, after it was banished at the end of the last volume, and its incursion into mainland France, throwing the government of President Fillon into disarray and bringing about new and nasty alliances between the forces ...

On Sunday, Boris Johnson announced that all adults who have not yet had a booster jab will be offered a jab before the New Year. Here in Ludlow, GPs have been working flat out to ramp up the booster programme, which was already well underway. There will be additional booster clinics in Ludlow run by Portcullis and Station Drive surgeries on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday offering around 3,800 booster jabs. Patients who are eligible are being contacted by text and by phone. As always, please don't ring your surgery to chase up your appointment. That would put additional pressure on ...

The Health Secretary Sajid Javid has ignored requests for a meeting with his local ambulance trust in the West Midlands, despite warnings that record delays are posing a "catastrophic risk" to patients in the region. Board documents from the trust reveal that the Health Secretary was invited to a meeting over four months ago but has still not replied. It comes despite the local trust warning that record handover delays at the region's hospitals are putting patients at risk of severe harm or even death, as it moved its risk rating to the highest possible level for the first time ...

And so the long march to Hungarian-style authoritarianism continues, with 'Justice' Secretary, Dominic Raab set to outline a sweeping overhaul of human rights law that he claims will counter "wokery and political correctness" and expedite the deportation of foreign criminals. As the Guardian reports, Raab claims that the highly controversial reforms will create a new bill of rights, including a permission stage to "deter spurious human rights claims" and 'change the balance between freedom of expression and privacy'. However, lawyers believe the proposed changes to the Human Rights Act are dangerous and fuelled by political rhetoric rather than necessity: Stephanie ...

The other day I had a chance meeting with a fellow Flickr user/photographer, formally residing in Maghull and back visiting relatives, and it led to me being able to make this posting. Via my encounter, I found out that they'd commissioned two paintings of the local railway scene in the 1960s as a visible reminder of those happy days growing up in the steam era. The paintings have been created from two of their own original photos of Liverpool Exchange to Glasgow trains. Here are the photos and paintings, first at Maghull, then at Ormskirk:- If you'd like to see ...

He had not been asleep a quarter of an hour when the boy opened the door and thrust in his head, which was like a bundle of badly-picked oakum. Quilp was a light sleeper and started up directly. The Old Curiosity Shop, chapter 5 You know, of course, what oakum is.
