I stopped my daily updates at the weekend, but no harm in a five-day check-in. A couple of people have asked whether I may have caught the omicron variant. The first case in Belgium was not detected until 26 November, and I was diagnosed on the 17th, so it seems unlikely. Anyway I don't particularly care; I just happen to been unlucky in how hard I have been hit, and there's not much point in speculating further. Other people have been much less lucky. A lot of you knew E in Belfast who died suddenly on Tuesday. She and her ...
The North Shropshire by-election is two weeks' today. Yesterday, I spent half-a-hour talking to the Lib Dem candidate for North Shropshire, Helen Morgan. I was impressed by her determination, her grasp of the issues from farming to public transport, and of the biggest issue, health. The first article discussing how the campaign is going was published earlier today. Helen spoke of the difficulty in getting to see a GP and the queues of ambulances outside the county's A&E's. In a very rural part of England, farmers are struggling in the transition from basic farm payments to the new Environmental Land ...
I have vivid memories of watching Image of the Fendahl when it first came out in 1977 - in retrospect, the last really satisfactory story of Season 15 of Doctor Who, though as a ten-year-old I was generally forgiving. When I rewatched it after thirty years in 2008, I wrote:I remember being a bit underwhelmed by Image of the Fendahl when it was first broadcast [am no longer sure that is true!], but I really liked it this time round. Having mourned the disruption of the Doctor/Leela partnership by K9's arrival in my write-up of The Invisible Enemy, actually we're ...
As Helen Morgan's campaign in North Shropshire gathers momentum – see last night's post showing that we are doing even better there than in Chesham and Amersham at the same stage) – party members are flocking to the seat. The Young Liberals are always a big part of any by-election and have already held several action days there with more to come until polling day on 16th. This is now a @WorrallJack's shoes stan account https://t.co/2HlZku9tXD — Young Liberals (@YoungLiberalsUK) November 20, 2021 You have no idea how much I want those shoes, by the way. The Young Liberals Campaigns ...

Yesterday, I spent half-a-hour talking to the Lib Dem candidate for North Shropshire, Helen Morgan. In this first of two articles, Helen tells us how the campaign is going with just two weeks to go. Sleaze is not a big topic on the doorsteps but trust in politicians is very low. People in Shropshire are fed up with politicians who appear for a photo call during an election but don't try to solve local problems in between. Helen wants to help restore that trust. The Conservative vote is very soft. A lot of people are thinking about switching their votes, ...
The UK Government may think that delayng its own inquiry into the handling of the covid panedemic until next spring will get it off the hook, but it seems that others are not prepared to wait, nor are they wiling to let Ministers forget how badly they have handled this crisis. The Independent reports that the People's Covid Inquiry, chaired by Michael Mansfield QC, accused the Government of "misconduct in public office" and gross negligence over the way it dealt with the virus. They say that the inquiry, which heard evidence from February this year until the summer, concluded that ...
Wed, 12:09: This was taped exactly 58 years ago, 1 Dec 1963, & has been giving me joy. The Beatles perform 3 songs and banter with Morecambe and Wise, & then John, Paul, George and Ernie sing "Moonlight Bay" à la Barbershop Quartet. Harmony in difference. https://t.co/ymQqDdp3EC Wed, 12:56: RT @simongerman600: What an amazing way to visualize early human migration. Lovely map by @HarvardCGA. I am really amazed that there is so much questioning about Johnson and his Christmas bash at Downing Street last. The only pleasure it gives is listening to Johnson and hapless Ministers being grilled on Sky and this morning on ... Continue reading →
