Glasgow was not a disaster after all. Neither was it a ringing success. Hopes had been building that the Conference of Parties would have reached an agreement that would get us near to capping global warming at 1.5°C. That target has been missed. The promises needed will be delivered in Egypt next year at COP27 at the earliest, if at all. But the ambition to limit the temperature rise 1.5°C is still alive and that is an achievement. There have been strides forward and the next COP has been brought forward to next year not the usual five year interval. ...

I wouldn't have said I had high hopes for the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. However, I was sufficiently optimistic to believe that world leaders would understand that time is running out, that COP26 represented an opportunity to put down some markers and that, at the very least, we should hear some bolder statements of intention. Alok Sharma, chairing proceedings, today told delegates "You all know that the world is willing us on to be bold - to be ambitious." Urging those present to support the draft plan published yesterday, he added: "So much rests on the decisions we collectively ...

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring won the Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation in 2001 (the last before the category was split into Long Form and Short Form), and the Nebula for 2002 (awarded in 2003) It also won four Oscars. IMDB users rank it top film of 2001 on one system but only fourth on the other, behind Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Thir13en Ghosts (which I had not heard of) and Donnie Darko. For the Nebula, it beat Shrek, The Dead Zone episode "Unreasonable Doubt" and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Once ...

'Good' is not a word I would use to describe a midlife crisis. There are many other words I could use but these would be too rude to mention on a blog. I may use those words while, for example, speaking to another midlifer while downing a Mojito or something similarly midlifery like but I ... The Covid pandemic gave us a temporary glimpse into apocalyptic living. Day to day life as we knew it ended in March 2020 as we stared into the face of the most serious and scary public health crisis in living memory. It forced unprecedented changes in our behaviour. Yet global force delivered vaccinations as the solution. The climate crisis is no less scary and necessitates similarly swift and robust measures to combat. Unless we rapidly reduce carbon emissions, we risk not a temporary but permanent state of apocalyptic living. Just like how Covid can be combatted by technological medical advancement, ...

Are the days when we expected politicians to set an example really over? I'm not talking about personal lives, that day never arrived, but in terms of looking after the best interests of the state, in this case ensuring we the Treasury receives all taxes it is due, so those worse off do not end up bearing a disproortionate burden. And yet despite all that expectation, nobody seems to surprised to find Boris Johnson jetting off to spend time in a £25,000 a week mansion, linked to Costa del Sol property businesses owned by Zac Goldsmith's family that engaged in ...

Up to 20,000 Middle Eastern refugees are stuck in a narrow strip of no-man's land as winter descends upon them. To the west—the dreamed of destination—is a razor wire fence and armed Polish guards. To the east are tens of thousands of armed Belarussian troops to prevent them from going back into Belarus proper. These refugees have paid thousands of dollars to the agents of Belarussian dictator Alexander Lukashenko who are scouring the Middle East in search of displaced persons in search of a better life in Europe. They collect their money. Tell them they are going to the promised ...
