Responding to the government tabling a motion to scrap its proposed new standards committee, Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Wendy Chamberlain, who led yesterday's emergency Commons debate on standards, said: "It is a victory for democracy and decency that the government has finally scrapped their crony committee for good. "This reflects the strength of feeling shown by MPs across the political spectrum at yesterday's emergency debate. "But this U-turn comes too late to undo the damage done to Boris Johnson and his government's reputation. People won't easily forget that the Tories tried to change the rules and undermine our democracy just ...
Free Speeches, by Denis Kitchen, Nadine Strossen, Dave Sim, Neil Gaiman and Frank Miller
Second paragraph of third section of the main essay, Nadine Strossen's address at the International Comics Convention, San Diego, 1996:The first core principle states what is not a sufficient justification for government restrictions on speech. This principle is "content-neutrality" or "viewpoint-neutrality." It was recently reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in its two decisions striking down laws that criminalized the burning of the U.S. flag.9 In those decisions, the Court described the requirement of content- or viewpoint-neutrality as the "bedrock principle" of our free speech jurisprudence; it is the notion that government may never suppress speech merely because the majority in ...
Bootle New Strand shopping centre I found the article (linked below) by Joshi Herrmann in the Post very interesting. I spent my whole working life in what used to be called Bootle's 'Mini-Whitehall' i.e. the collection of 1960s office blocks full of civil servants. Those jobs were brought to Bootle throughout the 1970s and into the 80s as part of what some called 'Exit London'. The idea was to bring decent jobs into a deprived area whilst saving government the high costs of buildings and employing people in the southeast. It always struck me as a good policy but ...
This government is the worst in my living memory – and I have lived under quite a few bad ones. Most people, even Conservative diehards, would empathise, especially given the latest 'stench'. We will no doubt continue to debate the questions of 'austerity' and other failings, but undoubtedly the most 'strong and stable' government in recent times was, for all its faults, the coalition administration from 2010-2015. This, by chance, resulted from a General Election conducted under First Past the Post. But given a proportional system of voting, coalition government is almost inevitable – and is to be welcomed. The ...

I am not in the habit of linking to the Daily Mail on this blog but every now and again there are exceptions, especially when that most loyal of Tory papers goes a bit rogue and starts to target a Conservative government. Like every other paper, they have taken the Owen Paterson affair as carte blanche to expose all the MPs who earn money from second jobs, ignoring the fact that these politicians are not breaking the rules, nor are they doing anything unethical. Personally, I believe that if you are being paid £82,000 a year to be a full ...
Liberal Democrat MPs last night voted against the Government's weak proposal to tackling sewage in local rivers. Commenting after the vote Liberal Democrat Communities & Rural Affairs Spokesperson Tim Farron MP said: Today, the government ignored millions of people who demanded action to save our treasured rivers and lakes. This is a slap in the face for what has been one of the boldest and more inspiring environmental campaigns in recent years. We needed to see legislation with real teeth today which gave water companies hard deadlines and targets. Instead, we have a flimsy new law which won't be strong ...
Cleaning up politics is a stunningly simple task, glaringly obvious to anyone - except those 250 Tory MPs who voted last week to protect their own. What we need to do is take all the money out of Westminster and let parliamentarians ... Continue reading →
News of the latest selection by Liberal Democrat members in a Conservative-Liberal Democrat marginal Westminster constituency: I'm honoured to be selected as the @LibDems MP candidate for Winchester. I will use my experience as a local vet and mental health campaigner to give Winchester the voice it deserves. People are tired of sleaze and corruption. Yesterday, the debate moved on from the behaviour of Owen Paterson to the behaviour of the government, especially prime minister Boris Johnson. Wendy Chamberlain who had requested the debate and said actions of the Government had tarnished the Common's reputation. Layla Moran said the government had distracted attention from the more important business of COP26. Tim Farron said ministers had undermined trust in democracy at every level and Alistair Carmichael said the decision to whip Conservative MPs was a seriously colossal error of judgment. Closing the debate, Wendy Chamberlain told MPs that the government's actions last week a clear executive ...
