The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) has appointed a cross-party group of parliamentarians in its presidential roles at its Annual General Meeting today. Baroness Ros Scott of Needham Market has become the new President of NALC. The Liberal Democrat peer took up the role, which became vacant when Conservative peer Baroness Jane Scott stood down after becoming a government whip. NALC has also changed its rules to introduce the new position of Parliamentary Vice-President. Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle (Green), Andrew Gwynne MP (Labour), Lord O'Shaughnessy (Conservative) and Lord Lytton (cross-bencher) were appointed to this role. Baroness Ros Scott, ...

This post first appeared on the RadixUK blog. Things fall apart," wrote Yeats in 1919, during the flu epidemic, "the centre cannot hold..." The best certainly lack all conviction, while the worst/Are also full of passionate intensity. It is a scary time, The problem for any government, not just one determined that we should still be living in around 1986, is that it has to be obvious to most of us that most of their quick fixes fix nothing. Continental lorry drivers don't want to work here - who could possibly have guessed it, and when we have been so ...
Philip Davies MP recently wrote to Ed Davey enquiring about the Liberal Democrats' internal selection procedures. Ed's reply is a joy to behold! It is worth reading the correspondence in full. Surprised that @philipdaviesuk is taking such an interest in the @LibDems' commitment to an equal parliament. Perhaps he has decided to turn his back on his sexist views, or perhaps he has a different motive. pic.twitter.com/bBf11NteV2 — Ed Davey MP [IMG: 🔶] [IMG: 🇪🇺] (@EdwardJDavey) October 22, 2021 * Paul Walter is a Liberal Democrat activist. Liberal Democrat Newswire #53 came out last week, including a look at how public opinion is, and isn't, moving over Britain's exit from the European Union.
The Liberal Democrats have accused the government of giving with one hand and snatching away with the other on public sector pay, given the national insurance tax hike and worsening cost of living crisis. Previous analysis by the House of Commons Library commissioned by the Liberal Democrats estimates that those working in health and social care will be faced with a tax hit of over £900 million due to the Conservative government's manifesto-breaking hike to national insurance. The research shows a nurse or midwife on an average salary would see their tax bill rise by £310 next year, care home ...
Fpr some reason Conservative MPs have been taken by surprise by the reaction to them voting down a Lords amendment to the Environment Bill seeking to place a legal duty on water companies not to discharge sewage into our waterways. Of course if the amendment had actually said that then one could understand MPs' protestations of innocence centred around cost and practicality, but the Lords were more subtle and realistic than the story being spun by Tory Central Office. The amendment actually called on water companies to make improvements to their sewerage systems and demonstrate progressive reductions in the harm ...
When the recent demolition works took place in Blackness Road east of Ashbank Road, the contractor placed barriers round the site including across some of the car parking to the rear in Glenagnes Street. As residents have pointed out to me, this removed around 9-10 parking spaces. Whilst whilst placing the barriers across the spaces was no doubt necessary during demolition for safety reasons, now the site is cleared and it will be many months before construction of the new flats starts, there is no need to continue to remove the spaces. I have said to Neighbourhood Services at the ...
