Jane Dodds addressed Scottish and Welsh conference yesterday. She said that the Lib Dems were opposed to Labour's failure to tackle poverty and the Conservatives' Universal Credit costs. She praised Kirsty Williams, highlighting international recognition of her work as Education Secretary. She accused the Conservative Government of suffocating the Welsh economy which is lagging behind with lower productivity, lower incomes and greater poverty. She blames Boris Johnson directly for the lorry driver shortage and says that those who are poorest will suffer most from his Brexit. And she has some gorgeous flowers in the background. Enjoy! Second paragraph of third chapter:He even made some dim, half-secret experiments towards remedying the deficiencies he suspected. He spent five shillings on five serial numbers of a Home Educator, and bought (and even thought of reading) a Shakespeare and a Bacon's 'Advancement of Learning,' and the poems of Herrick from a chap who was hard up. He battled with Shakespeare all one Sunday afternoon, and found the 'English Literature,' with which Mr. Woodrow had equipped him, had vanished down some crack in his mind. He had no doubt it was very splendid stuff, but he couldn't quite make out what ...

10th October every year is World Mental Health Day. This is a cause that is very close to Lib Dem hearts. We were talking about it long before it became mainstream. We understand the impact of poor mental health and when Norman Lamb was health minister in England during the coalition years, he did so much to improve access to mental health care, particularly for young people. In Scotland we have never been lucky enough to have a Health Minister who actually gets it. And things are getting worse. A GP gave evidence to a Holyrood Committee this week saying ...
Ed Davey calls for extension of Warm Homes Discount scheme to help poorest with soaring energy costs
On Trevor Phillips on Sky this morning, Ed Davey did a fantastic job of taking down the Conservatives over their "cruel" cuts to Universal Credit. As a former Secretary of State for Energy, he speaks with some authority on rising fuel prices and how to help the poorest through that. He called for the Warm Homes Discount, currently worth £140 to those on certain benefits or low incomes to be doubled or tripled and for eligibility to be extended. He also highlighted how he had continued the insulation programmes in place when he took over, but the Conservatives had failed ...

In this weekend's World Review, Tom Arms comments on the implications of a mutual defence pact between Greece and France for Turkey's role in NATO. Heading for cooler climes, Covid-19 has reached Antarctica but for those who as destined to suffer or die from malaria in sub-Sharan Africa, a vaccine has been approved for to tackle the disease. Tension are building in the east and Taiwan, China, the US and other countries are in danger of falling into the trap of unintended consequences. Can Facebook be held to account? And how can Boris boast about Britain being one of the ...
This weekend Scotland and Wales have combined their Autumn Conferences. On Friday, Scotland held its Autumn Conference, yesterday there was a day of joint Scottish and Welsh panels, debates and keynote speeches and today there is a Welsh Conference. Yesterday, Ed Davey gave his keynote speech, contrasting the Lib Dems as fighting for a fair deal for people with cruel, out of touch Conservatives. He highlighted our fight against illiberal, impractical vaccine passports: Friends, we show through our federal party the best of what a federal United Kingdom can be. "Understanding that each nation, region and community must often respond ...

The homes were founded more than 100 years ago as an orphanage for Anglo-Indian children. Since then it has developed to be a successful boarding school for children from Nursery to Senior ages, with an additional hostel in Kolkata for school leavers progressing to higher ...
As Liberty point out there is already a strong authoritarian streak running through this Conservative government. They point out that during the pandemic, the Government frequently made drastic changes to our rights and freedoms with barely a moment's notice with next to no oversight from Members of Parliament. COVID regulations have been created and amended upwards of 425 times - with many coming into force before or on the same day that MPs first had a chance to debate these changes. They add that the Government is shutting down accountability by trying to make it much more difficult to challenge ...
