Rose, by Jon Arnold

Given the very encouraging news that Russell T. Davies is returning to Doctor Who, it's by fortunate coincidence that today I am reviewing a study of his first ever Who episode back in 2005. I actually wrote most of this entry over a week ago, little realising how appropriate the timing would turn out to be. Second paragraph of third chapter of Rose by Jon Arnold, with footnotes:This makes them [Ian and Barbara] outliers in terms of Doctor Who companions. Of the companions during the remainder of 20th-century Doctor Who, only Steven truly carries a whole story by himself (The ...

Galaxy Quest

Galaxy Quest won the Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation in 2000, beating The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, Being John Malkovich and The Iron Giant in that order That was also the order at nominations phase, Galaxy Quest three votes ahead of The Matrix for the top spot and Toy Story 2 just two votes away from the last place on the ballot. In final ballot voting it came behind The Matrix on first preferences but picked up a lot more transfers for a convincing win. [IMG: movie poster] It also won the 2000 Nebula for Best Script, awarded in 2001; ...

Good news from Wimbledon, one of the top targets for the Liberal Democrats at the next general election: Delighted to have been renominated as Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Wimbledon & grateful to members for their support. We were just 628 votes behind the Tories last time & I call on everyone who wants to see an end to this incompetent misrule to support my campaign. pic.twitter.com/YypMYHDvSn — Cllr Paul Kohler [IMG: 🔶] SW19 (@PaulKohlerSW19) September 25, 2021

Hello! I'm Mark Pack, author of both 101 Ways To Win An Election and Bad News: what the headlines don't tell us, along with maintaining the largest database of national voting intention polls in the UK, stretching back to 1943. The next general election is most likely several years away, but political polling of voting intentions for a general election is in full swing. Half-a-dozen firms are polling regularly, with a handful of occasional surveys from others too. Below the table, you'll find the option to sign up to email updates about new polls and also a set of answers ...

Last night a vigil was held in Lewisham for Sabina Nessa, the young teacher murdered as she took a short walk at around 8:30 on Friday 17th September to meet a friend. Liberal Democrat Councillor Rabina Khan was there and posted the heartbreaking speech from Sabina's sister, who showed incredible courage in speaking. #SabinaNessa's sister speaks about Sabina. There were seven local by-elections on Thursday night. It was a mixed bag of results for the Lib Dems with some great holds but a very narrow loss too. There were two great defences in Kendal as newly elected Lib Dem Councillors Jonathan Cornthwaite (Kendal North ward, South Lakeland DC) and Phil Walker (Strickland Ward, Kendal TC) both won with just short of 50% of the vote. Congratulations to Jonathan, Phil and the Lib Dem team in Kendal. The full results are below and you can find full breakdowns here. Kendal North Ward, South Lakeland DC Lib Dem 622 (47%) ...

Many of us have been banging on ad nauseum for some considerable time on the consequences of the hostile environment for the UK economy and our day to day lives, and yet despite the overwhelming evidence, UK government ministers have not just ignored the evidence, but have used Brexit to double down on restrictions with appalling consequences. Ar last, however, there there appears to be a chink of light, a dawning realisation that things are not all well and that a u-turn is needed. What brought this on may well have been the sign of people panic-buying fuel in defiance ...

Polling this month by Opinium shows Labour supporters think it would be much more acceptable for a future hung Parliament to result in a coalition featuring Liberal Democrats than do Conservatives.

While the world public's attention was focused on submarine rows between allies and the rising Chinese threat, Vladimir Putin was making disturbing diplomatic and political moves to change the security map on the European side of the Eurasian land mass. The focus of Putin's efforts is Belarus and the faltering regime of Alexander Lukashenko. Ever since his clearly fraudulent elections, "Europe's last dictator" has suffered riots, demonstrations, defecting Belarussians and Western sanctions. All of this presents opportunities and problems for Vladimir Putin and headaches for everyone else. A Lukashenko/Putin summit plus a major military manoeuvre underscored both. First the Military ...

At a recent meeting of the council's City Development Committee, future 20 mph zones were discussed. On the proposed list of new zones to be implemented in the period to 2027, I was disappointed to note no new proposals for the West End and I highlighted during the meeting that I regularly raise with roads officers residents' requests for further 20 mph zones in residential areas. The area I have had most requests for is the Logie area where there is a large elderly population given the northern part of the estate is sheltered housing. Having very narrow streets, Logie ...

When I came across this entry in the old boy's diary, with its characteristic interest in Evan Harris's long-running feud with the local peasantry and Eric Clapton's tribute to Layla Moran, I naturally assumed he was back to normal - using the term in its widest sense. The noted East End gangster and philanthropist After Sarah Greene's victory I spent my days wandering the Oxfordshire countryside like the poet Arnold's Scholar-Gipsy. I found the charred remains of the castle once occupied by Dr Evan Harris in the surprisingly mountainous country east of Abingdon - I fear those peasants with their ...
