The Government has told MPs to stop taking up the cases of Afghan nationals who are still in the country and in need of help. In a letter to MPs, Home Office minister Victoria Atkins said that the Government will not be able "to respond to colleagues with specific updates on individuals" given the "deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan." MPs are being told by the Government to signpost individuals towards the Government's resettlement schemes "rather than seek to pursue cases on their behalf." Layla Moran MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, said: "The Conservatives have turned their back on ...
This post first appeared in the Radix UK blog... In case anyone is at all interested, I have begun a peculiarly fearsome diet called the Wahls Paleo Plus - which involves eating very little except for meat, fish and vegetables, also minimising carbohydrates like potatoes. I'm doing it because I am convinced it will bring back some of my missing voice, which has been slowly dwindling since I was working at the heart of government in 2012, and is now largely AWOL. The point about this blog, though, is to unpack some of the ideas behind paleo. For one thing, ...
And we humans? We made our entrance on 31 December, at approximately 11 p.m. Then we spent about an hour roaming around as hunter-gatherers, only getting around to inventing farming at 11:58 ...
Fake news and hate speech online – much of it spread via the giant tech platforms. Government ministers brazenly lying. Threats to the integrity of our elections through the dissemination of misinformation on social media. National newspapers that are increasingly partisan, and a local press too financially enfeebled to hold politicians to account. In recent years, the quality of public debate in Britain has deteriorated sharply, thanks to all these factors and the increasing rejection of traditionally accepted norms of behaviour. And this threatens the very fabric of our democracy. We have lost a set of shared truths and facts ...
Some thoughts on Motion F12: Tackling the Climate Emergency: Proposals for Carbon Pricing
Motion F12 states that Lib Dem carbon pricing policy should be to reform the UK Emissions Trading System (ETS), and seek to return to the EU ETS. Carbon pricing was last debated by the party in 2005 and a simple carbon tax applied upstream to 'primary fuels' was supported then. Since then there have been several successful real world applications of the revenue neutral carbon pricing policy known as Carbon Fee and Dividend or Climate Income. In this system a steadily and predictably escalating carbon fee is placed on fossil fuels 'upstream', (i.e. at the point of extraction or production ...
Last week, a developer on Clee Hill built fencing against decades old housing on Tenbury Road. That has prevented residents opening their windows. Media reports even suggest that the developer has told residents that if they open the windows on the back of their homes, they will be trespassing. Richard Huffer who represents Clee on Shropshire Council has been working to resolve these issues over the last few years. Last Wednesday, he sent an urgent message to the most senior officer in Shropshire Council's planning department asking for action "urgently before this escalates with potential harm and further media coverage." ...
Social care has reared it's head again on the national stage and some money has been proposed starting in 2023 with the new Health and Care Bill which just had its first reading. Firstly, what IS social care? Well, it can be anything. Some people call it tasks of daily living and, while somewhat banal, it is also extremely important. Let's face it, the engineers and retailers have made life easy for us. We now have prepared meals to go into the oven, washing machines, dishwashers, and some of us even have robotic vacuum cleaners. Who is eligible? Anybody who ...

This year's autumn conference will see the launch of the party's Federal International Relations Subcommittee on China to help the party and its members understand and deal with the multifaceted challenges of a rising authoritarian China. In March 2019, when the UK was part of the EU, the Joint Communication EU-China: A Strategic Outlook came out. It defined the EU's approach to China in the following way: China is, simultaneously, in different policy areas, a cooperation partner with whom the EU has closely aligned objectives, a negotiating partner with whom the EU needs to find a balance of interests, an ...

Anybody doing the weekly shop has noticed that certain items are no longer available on supermarket shelves, and according to some experts that trend is to continue. The Independent reports that he head of the Food and Drink Federation, Ian Wright, has said staff shortages - triggered by a combination of Covid and Brexit - have killed off the "just-in-time" delivery model. He claims food shortages in supermarkets and restaurants are "permanent" and shoppers will never again enjoy a full choice of items: But Downing Street rejected the claim of a broken system and, in a potential hostage to fortune, ...
Contrary to popular and academic belief, says Deborah Boucoyannis, Adam Smith did not accept inequality as a necessary trade-off for a more prosperous economy: "The key principles of Smith's system work against the concentration of wealth - they also speak to the top issues in economic policy today: profits, taxes, and the minimum wage." Clio Chang argues that the past decade has seen all that was most fun about the internet destroyed by an increasingly unsustainable media ecosystem built for the wealthy. Why are boys more likely than girls to be deemed to have special educational needs? James Redburn investigates. ...
