Second frame of third chapter: I have been thoroughly enjoying the Thirteenth Doctor comics, perhaps even a little more than the TV show. Here Jody Houser brings the four-strong TARDIS crew to play a Rosencrantz-and-Guildenstern type role in the background of Blink, which remains for me the single best episode of New Who. The Thirteenth Doctor bonds with Martha Jones, and sheepishly realises the Tenth Doctor's emotional cluelessness; and the Tenth Doctor meanwhile is perturbed by three time-travelling strangers. There are Autons and a Time Agent as well, but who cares? It's immense fun just to see the characters actually ...

Free trade and globalisation; just-in-time supply chains; the supply of cheap labour (such as lorry drivers or fruit pickers); each of these has been a critical aspect of economic development in the last twenty or more years in developed countries. And almost every day I read an article about each of these is unravelling. This ... Continue reading The developed world's business model unravels. Is that a good thing?

The Paralympics have been a delight, and we still have another week to enjoy. We have seen athletes carrying out seemingly impossible feats – playing table tennis while holding the bat in the mouth, swimming without arms, cycling with one leg – and we have heard from commentators who share the disabilities of the competitors. And what about the joys of Wheelchair rugby? Apparently it was called Murder Ball until the sport decided to become legitimate and started applying for grant support. Looking very much like dodgems on speed, it is probably the most physical and chaotic of all Paralympic ...

The Independent has more on government plans to insist on voters producing IDs at polling stations. They say that a report, published by parliament's cross-party Joint Committee on Human Rights, has warned that the demand to show photo ID at the polling station could deny the right to vote to large numbers of people and create barriers to minority groups participating in elections. They estimate that the plan could discriminate against as many as 2 million elderly, disabled and ethnic minority people. And the report found that the problem which the measure is supposed to solve, of people fraudulently passing ...

A very good friend of mine has emailed me recently to say that that he has joined the SNP. He is a supporter of an independent Scotland. He posed a very interesting questions, which I felt, is worth exploring a bit more. The members of the SNP were asked to vote whether to support a collaborative agreement with the Green Party. As we know, the agreement would create an overall majority for independence in the Scottish Parliament, push the climate debate and emphasise the importance of close cooperation with our partners in Europe. It was really interesting to read that ...

Residents recently highlighted to me that at the tenants' car park between Lower Pleasance and Polepark Road, a buddleia is starting to take over and will no doubt start to cause damage to the boundary wall if left to its own devices. I raised this with the City Council and have been assured it will be passed to appropriate officers for attention.

Embed from Getty ImagesThe Mirror reports claims that plans have been drawn up to move Britain's nuclear-armed submarines to the US or France if Scotland votes for independence: UK government officials have reportedly examined basing them in the US, France or Devonport. Another option would be creating a British overseas territory within Scotland, it is claimed. Basing the British deterrent in the US would expose the fiction that it is in any way independent, but it's the last point that interests me here. The realities of Brexit are pushing this Conservative government into making Britain resemble a Soviet satellite state ...
