Paul and Rebecca Whitewick say in their YouTube blurb: We document the three main attempts to build a tunnel prior to the First World War. The Solent Tunnel was set to join the Isle of Wight with the mainland via three separate railway tunnel attempts. Each failed, we take a look at all the evidence we can find to piece this mystery together.

Good news from Guildford: I'm thrilled to be able to share that I've been reselected as the Parliamentary Candidate for Guildford constituency. [IMG: 🙂] Last GE we came just 3,337 votes behind the Conservatives. Together we can make sure we win next time. I'd love to have you involved: https://t.co/bKB9Pi55Zc https://t.co/TF8KfbTRe5 — Zöe Franklin [IMG: 🔶] (@ZoeFranklinLD) August 25, 2021 Zoe is bright, energetic and inspiring. I remember her speaking at a Scottish Lib Dem conference fringe meeting a couple of years ago giving lots of ideas about local campaigning. She closed the gap last time and could regain the ...

Writing in the Independent, former Lib Dem leader Vince Cable talks of harrowing scenes at Kabul airport and asks if Britain is planning to take enough Afghan refugees and whether the Home Office is thinking of treating them with a generous spirit. Some Afghans working for our government will be told they do not have a strong enough connection with Britain, even though the documents showing that connection could qualify them for execution by the Taliban. Are we an overcrowded island? Or will we benefit from people who bring skills, entrepreneurial energy, cultural diversity and a supply of labour to ...

My grandparents fled the pogroms in Russia and several members of my family escaped from the Nazis in Germany. A lifetime as an activist in the Liberal Democrats has taught me that immigration is a blessing not a curse and we have always stood up for those fleeing persecution. And as an Asylum Judge, I heard every day harrowing tales of people who have not been welcomed to our country. The first Afghan refugee arrivals came to two hotels bang in the middle of my division in Hertfordshire. Sunday morning saw a three mile traffic jam outside a car park. ...

As the designated grocery shopper in my household, I have noticed, along with others, the sudden increase in the number of empty supermarket shelves and non-availability of certain essential items since lockdown eased. At first it was cat food, now it is a whole range of goods which are becoming difficult to find. Wales-on-Line reports that shoppers have been left angered at the lack of items available in supermarkets across Britain, blamed on Brexit, a shortage of staff and 'pinged' workers. And that in an attempt to distract from the glaring gaps on the shelves, supermarket staff have become creative ...

In Part One, I offered a view of why and when the occupation of Afghanistan failed. In Part Two, I explore the future implications. The first shorter term problem is the evacuation. It could be used as pretext to keep a contingent of special forces in the country, and keep the conflict going. Liberal Democrats have emphasised the need for a land corridor from Kabul to Pakistan, but this would require negotiation with the Talebs, as yet absent. A further dimension to this is the wave of Western media stories about ISIS and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, despite scant evidence ...

Second paragraph of third story ("When This Peace Thing Blows Over", by John Skylar):For a black hole, there's a spot, the event horizon, where you can't escape even if you're a beam of light. Past that, the hole is totally black. Hence the name. But around that border, gravity focuses light from the other side of the hole. It creates a bright, bent corona around the emptiness. As if its beauty alone could suck you in through that brilliant iris into a pupil of oblivion. In Maryam's eyes, I slipped over this event horizon and was lost forever.OK, a big ...

What with lockdown and school closures, I feared for the future of a recently established silly-season staple. But a search of Google News shows it was alive and well this summer. You know how the story goes. A group of teenage boys want to wear shorts to school in a heatwave but are told by the authorities that they can't. So they read the small print of their school's uniform policy and find there's nothing to say that boys can't wear skirts. And that's how they turn up the next morning. In June it happened in Moffat, where a 16-year-old ...
