Second paragraph of third chapter:Mr. Polly's depression manifested itself in a general slackness. A certain impatience in the manner of Mr. Garvace presently got upon his nerves. Relations were becoming strained. He asked for a rise of salary to test his position, and gave notice to leave when it was refused.I have been curious about this book since I was ten. In the summer of 1977, Roy Castle did a series of children's programmes for the BBC on musicals, two of which particularly stuck with me: Salad Days, which had had a revival the previous year, and the last in ...

This weekend we're publishing all the speeches from Alex Cole-Hamilton's launch event as Scottish Lib Dem leader. Maddy Planche, a student and activist from Edinburgh, who is definitely one to watch for the future, introduced Alex and talked about how he had listened to her and taken her seriously when she first got involved. For as long as politics has been around, there has always been the assumption that young people just don't care enough about it. It doesn't take much to notice that at this current point in time, you could not be further from the truth. In fact, ...

Afghanistan

I suspect that Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour Party's current leader, will not be pleased by Tony Blair's belligerent entry into the debate on the withdrawal from Afghanistan. It is a stark reminder that it was the Labour Party, with Blair obsequiously coat-tailing of the American President, that got us involved in this debacle in the first place. In response to the devastating attacks on the US on 11th September 2001 President Bush declared a "war on terror" and chose Afghanistan as the enemy. Tony Blair dutifully supported the move, but it was the wrong move. The attack on the ...

This weekend we are running all the speeches from Alex Cole-Hamilton's rally on Friday after he was declared Scottish Lib Dem leader. Next up is his best friend and the architect of Alex's, Christine Jardine's and Wendy Chamberlain's successful election campaigns. From his speech you get quite an insight into their relationship and into Alex as a person. Alex may have the biggest vote of any MSP, but Kevin gained the highest number of first preferences of any councillor in Scotland. This man knows how to win elections and he's on a mission to make sure we win as many ...

The disastrous after-effects of the disgusting way that the UK, USA and other NATO members left Afghanistan begs a question that we should have been asking for the last 5 years. "What happens when the USA gives up its role ... Continue reading →

As the Scottish Greens go into what looks very much like a Coalition with the SNP, taking 2 yet to be announced ministerial positions, it would be tempting to treat them with exactly the same kindness and empathy they showed us when we were entering coalition at Westminster in 2010. Before we had even done anything, they were turning hyperbolic abuse into an art form. But we should be bigger people here. We are, after all, in favour of electoral systems which encourage coalition and cross-party working. We will have to judge the Greens by their actions. And it's not ...

Did the British bands who discovered rhythm and blues in the 1960s rip off the Black American artists who originally played it? That's not how the John Lee Hooker website sees it: When the young bohemian artists of the 1960s "discovered" Hooker, among other notable blues originators, he found his career taking on a new direction. With the folk movement in high gear, Hooker returned to his solo, acoustic roots, and was in strong demand to perform at colleges and folk festivals around the country. Across the Atlantic, emerging British bands were idolizing Hooker's work. Artists like the Rolling Stones, ...

This weekend we are publishing all the speeches from the rally Alex Cole-Hamilton held to mark his election as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats. Here, Molly Nolan, who stood for us in Caithness, Sutherland and Ross, talks about the effect of the SNP's centralising agenda on rural, highland communities. A family of four moving away can be a cataclysmic event in a small community. Last week, I spoke to a teacher in the North Highlands, and we got to talking about depopulation in the area. "When the MacLeod family left with their children, that was a very dark time ...

Residents will recall that I recently highlighted that the foliage on the roundabout at Riverside Avenue/Drive near the Riverside Inn was so overgrown, a pedestrian trying to cross could not see on-coming traffic. I asked the City Council's Roads Maintenance Partnership to attend to this. This has now been carried out - and it looks a lot better.
