Today is one of those days when it is amazing to be a Lib Dem. Liberal Democrats sweep Highland Council by-elections in Caithness and Inverness https://t.co/3FWtECLzqB — NOSN Newspapers (@GroatNews) August 13, 2021 It's so important to stand everywhere, even if you don't have the resources to campaign, to give people the chance to vote Lib Dem. That's why I'm so glad that Emanuel Andjelic and Ruby Kirkwood stood in Weavers Ward in Tower Hamlets and in West Kilbride and Dalry in Ayrshire respectively. Ruby was a councillor in Ayrshire between 2007 and 2012 and it is so good to ...
In light of the rapid Taliban advance since the withdrawal of US ground forces from Afghanistan, the Liberal Democrats are calling for the UN to deploy peacekeepers, to protect Afghan citizens, and for Parliament to be recalled so MPs can discuss the situation. Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said:"If Donald Trump had made this decision, the whole world would rightly be calling it out. Joe Biden cannot get a free pass just because he is a Democrat."Afghanistan is spiralling towards a devastating civil war. Millions of women and girls are facing medieval brutality. International terrorism will thrive under ...

Over the last few months, I've been working away at a little project: to win Civilization 6 on every one of the maps, on all four victory settings. For each game I played, In decided in advance which victory I was going for and chose a map, but let the game assign me a leader, and in general it worked. A waste of time? Well, I don't get as much from it as I do from reading or watching a film. But it is tremendously satisfying to Take Over The World, in various different ways, in various different worlds. I ...
As COP26 approaches, Boris Johnson is looking more and more like a rabbit confused by headlights. Flashing into his eyes are the growing number of Conservative MPs who believe that greening the economy fast by driving ahead electric cars, reducing wasteful consumption and cutting our impact on the environment will damage "the economy". This is a Tory monopolistic view of the economy. Continue in the old ways that are destroying our planet. That must be good in their view because there is money in shareholder's pockets. It is proving hard to convince many national politicians, local councils and punters in ...
It was great to have Survation's Damian Lyons Lowe on Never Mind The Bar Charts, fresh off the back of his firm's success in polling the Hartlepool by-election. As well as talking about how he got into political polling and what to watch out for when a surprising poll appears, we discussed whether everyone is just paying too much attention to political polls. Does it really matter what they are currently saying? Listen to find out... Feedback very welcome, and do share this podcast with others who you think may enjoy it. Show notes Yes, it is fun watching people ...
Here is the YouTube blurb for this impressive interview: Lenny Harper was an outstanding detective who came to police the island of Jersey bringing his experience of Northern Ireland during the Troubles, the Gorbals, Soho and many other extremely tough postings. He describes himself as a 'gutter' or 'sewer' cop, ready to deal with the worst of society. Although he was not told at the time, this was why he was selected by his chief, Graham Power, to head operations in Jersey. He found the elite society of Jersey to be at least as much of a sewer as anywhere ...

The Independent reports that more than half a million European citizens living in the UK are still awaiting a decision over their status six weeks on from the June deadline for the settlement scheme. They say European nationals and their families were asked to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme by 30 June so they could carry on living and working in Britain after Brexit. But just over 569,000 applications to the scheme were still pending in July, according to the latest Home Office data: Campaigners said the government's failure to clear the huge backlog had left a large number ...
I have had numerous (and I mean numerous!) concerns raised by residents about the proposed road layout on Perth Road at Invergowrie Drive and near Glamis Road to accommodate the merger of cyclists and vehicles from the sections of new cycle lane. The provision of traffic islands I (and many residents) felt was not a good idea at all as it was resulting in vehicles going onto the opposite side of the road and I questioned this with the project manager, passing onto him many residents' concerns. As a result I was advised that a review meeting was taking place ...
When I gave talks on blogging I suggested that one use of a blog is as a writer's notebook. You can upload as much of your research as you choose and link it all together. If you are lucky, your readers will help out - for an example see the comments on a post about my own personal Thirties poet W.T. Nettlefold. So here are my latest discoveries about the now obscure historical novelist Vaughan Wilkins. If this post is not for you, try my latest Joy of Six or listen to Scott Walker as a 15-year-old. First I have ...
