It is ironic that our National Health Service, within weeks of being honoured by the award of the George Cross for its sterling work during the pandemic, should be downgraded from 1st to 4th place in the pecking order of developed countries' health services. The UK is now in fourth place, ousted from the first by Norway, the Netherlands and Australia in that order. The deterioration of the NHS is just one example of the general deterioration of public services in the UK, particularly over the last 11 years of Conservative rule as a result of their ideal of ...

Second paragraph of third story ("Einstein and the Doctor", by Jo Cotterill):'I can't believe we're going to meet Einstein,' Graham said, his eyes alight. Scottish Lib Dem Autumn Conference takes place online on 8-9 October. The deadline for submitting motions is noon next Thursday, 12th August. So get your ideas down on paper and find either a local party, organisation like Scottish Lib Dem Women or Scottish Young Liberals, or 25 members to support it. If 25 seems like a lot, remember that there are over 700 members in the Liberal Democrats Scotland group on Facebook and you can often persuade people to sign the motion whether or not they agree with it just to give it the chance of being debated. The difference between Liberals and Libertarians is that Liberals position liberty within community: the limits on individual freedom are set by consideration for others. (In this Liberals follow J. S. Mill, Adam Smith's The Theory of Moral Sentiments, and many others.) Libertarians reject the idea that individuals are rooted in communities. They are for individual freedom without qualification. For them the pursuit of individual self-interest provides the dynamic for economic growth and personal freedom; state interference only limits both. The misplaced evidence

The Guardian reports that a health minister replaced his mobile phone before it could be searched for information relevant to £85m of deals that are subject to a legal challenge: James Bethell, who oversaw the award of Covid contracts, is one of those under scrutiny over the way deals for personal protective equipment (PPE) and tests were allocated at the height of the pandemic. Residents have highlighted overgrown foliage from council-maintained ground on Logie Avenue that is protruding right across the pavement. I have raised this with the City Council to get this cut back.

The Great Northern and London North Western Joint Railway opened in 1878 from Market Harborough to Newark, with a branch into Leicester and its own terminus at Belgrave Road. The line ran through country that was too remote to generate much passenger traffic, but it carried plenty of freight. Passenger services ceased in 1953 and, but for a few fragments, the whole line was closed by 1964. This splendid video follows the remains of the line from Welham Junction, just north of Market Harborough, to Cotham, just south of Newark.
