Barack Obama said that being past 50, "you wake up and something hurts and you don't know exactly what happened, right?" Hello midlifers, time to face up to some home truths. I call it 'home truths' because midlifers, including me, hate acknowledging that our bodies aren't functioning the way it once did. We make excuses ... The post 1, 2, 5 – exactly how many midlife health issues do you have? appeared first on A Midlifer in London .
I took B yesterday to visit the Vlooybergtoren, a lookout tower a few km north of where she lives (at 50.926611 N 4.916528 E to be precise). The weather was not fantastic, but we had also been (with all three kids) two years ago and I don't seem to have written that up here at the time, so here are the rather better photographs from 2019 mixed in with the overcast ones from yesterday. It was built in 2013 to replace an old wooden watchtower that had collapsed after repeated vandalism, and was then enlarged in 2018 after another vandalism ...
I recently visited this art gallery and museum with daughter Jen and a fine place it is too. Sadly, due to austerity and money troubles for Wirral Council, it's had more than a few threats to its continued existence but thankfully it is safe for now. Here's a link to its website:- williamsonartgallery.org/ I took quite a few photos of the exhibits and here are my personal favourites:- Trams at Woodside by George Anthony Butler 1927 – 2010 – Painted in 1988 Winter Twilight by James Thomas Watts 1853 – 1930 – Purchased 1913 A beautiful display of pottery. It's great to have local government by-elections back, especially when we have as good a night as we did last Thursday. We have a really good chance of gaining two new councillors in the Highlands on August 12th. Colin Aitken is hoping to gain the Inverness West seat from Independent and Jill Tilt is hoping to gain Wick and East Caithness, also from Independent. Liberal Democrat councillors are currently in administration with the Labour and Independent groups in this vast council which stretches from the north coast to Skye , Lochaber and more than 50 miles south of Inverness. It ...

Beach Baby, my choice of two weeks ago, generated a response, so here is another excursion into the charts of 1974. That January, Vado Via made number in the 17 UK singles chart, making it a rare foreign language hit. (The previous one had been Steeleye Span's Gaudette, which was in Latin.) Maybe the Italian lyrics helped it. You can tell something emotional is going on, but are not sure what, leaving you free to write your own story. Drupi took his name from the cartoon character Droopy - he was born Giampiero Anelli in Italy. As an adult he ...
World Review: Capitol Hill riots, Iran withdrawal, ice cream wars, China and the Taliban
In this weekend's column, Tom Arms reviews the inquiry into the Capitol Hill Riots and whether the Republicans are right to stay away. The American withdrawal from Iraq after 18 years will allow Tehran to expand its influence and move up to the border with Israel. Ice cream producer Cherry Garcia is crossing spoons with the Israeli government over its decision to stop sales of Ben and Jerry's ice cream in the Occupied Territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with a predictable reaction from the Israeli government. Beijing has made it clear that it is sticking to its ...

Residents have raised with me the fact that the path from Riverside Avenue to Perth Road just west of River Crescent is badly overgrown. I have asked environment management at the City Council to get it cut back and tidied.
The Independent reports on new research which shows that the Conservatives are receiving donations worth £17,500 a day from businesses in the property sector They add that gifts to the Tories from companies directly linked to property development have totalled just over £10m since the start of 2019. At the same time separate research published in the Financial Times found that gifts from a wider group of companies and individuals with an interest in property development - also including groups like hotel and care home operators - now make up around a quarter of all donations to the Conservatives, totalling ...
